Every time I rewrite this summary blurb, I have to take a nap afterward. Here is my latest attempt with bullet points:• Languages and linguistics are super interesting to me. I’m fluent in English, studied American Sign Language for four years during my undergrad, took two years of Spanish in high school, and have studied patterns in additional languages.• I’m researching the Russian-Ukrainian war’s impact on language. I presented at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium for the 18th International Pragmatics Conference (July 2023). The research was also chosen for publication.• I love graphic design so much that I do it for free, all the time. I still make T-shirt graphics and event flyers for the high school I graduated from. My advisor there introduced me to the Adobe Creative Suite and permanently influenced the course of my professional trajectory; I’ll never thank him enough.• After experiencing personal loss, I wanted to create projects that would strengthen our youth—that would build curiosity, advocacy, leadership, and growth—so I started designing campaigns with a nonprofit that empowers students to fight against the destructive nature of substance abuse.• I like to stand at the intersection between language and design, fusing the concepts together as visual communication. I aim for my creative work to encapsulate both high linguistic quality and deep artistic meaning; the publication design for the Ballard Social Impact Center’s 20th Anniversary Report presented such an opportunity, as did my exhibition design work, and I'm on the hunt for more like them.• Applying my visual communication ideologies to marketing has proven very effective at the individual, nonprofit, and corporate levels; during my marketing internship with Pacific Seafood, I significantly increased viewership and engagement on all of their major social platforms, receiving special recognition for my work from executive leadership.Visual communication is all about #speakingvisually. Fusing design and language is how I hope to do my part in changing the world. :)Bonus bio pieces: I was raised on a goat farm and worked my very first paid job as a farmhand for a small alpaca operation. I have soft spots for animal conservation, exquisite photography, the lava cakes from Domino's pizza, free verse poetry, cello music, and genuine people. I'm another one of your team players who will stay up late working on projects, and I WILL buy the polo with the logo on it.My digital portfolio is online at www.hxdesigner.com.
