Part of a small team responsible for ensuring that aero engines are worthy for flight in adverse weather conditions from both a safety and cost of ownership issue. As part of this role, the tasks that I have completed include:• Responsible for certification of the Trent XWB -97 for Operation in Ice Forming Conditions and Volcanic Ash• Development of a computational tool to identify critical areas for icing in the flight envelope by using analysis of engine performance data, approximations of transient behaviour and physics-based models• Using CFD particle tracking to predict ice growth on engine components to setup certification icing tests• On-site ice specialist support at the Rolls-Royce GLACIER facility in Canada including inspections, initial analysis and selecting the direction of further testing• Post-test analysis of engine data including development of a MATLAB tool to align video data and transient performance logs• Communicating findings to a broad range of internal and external stakeholders at multiple levels including EASA and Airbus• Setup and managed working level meetings with Airbus counterparts

I was given the task of designing and specifying an automated life-cycle testing system for the pneumatic parts and systems produced by the company. Although I was mainly left to work individually, I was given guidance on how to manage my project. This involved meeting with test engineers and specialist test suppliers to find a compromise between what was feasible and what was needed. I was also given the opportunity to work on the shop floor, constructing and testing pneumatic timer circuits.
