Owing to my expertise in the venture capital community and business plan evaluation, I was recruited to join an elite group of experts to judge Start-Up Chile's business plan submissions. Education, e-Commerce, and Social Enterprise sector proposals are my specialties. Start-Up Chile is an innovative program of the Chilean Government's Chilean Economic Development Agency. The program attracts early-stage entrepreneurs from around the world to start up formative stage businesses in Chile to address international markets. Successful applicants are given $35K of seed money (no equity), a year's visa to come to develop their plans in supportive facilities in Santiago. For each of nine rounds, I read and scored 10 entries to assess their team, project, market and impact on the Chilean entrepreneurial ecosystem. I am very proud of the excellent record of this program bringing over 1000 startups from 80 countries to Chile since its founding in 2010. It inspires local startups and other countries to copy and innovate on this most important program.

I am an SV2 partner engaged in creating strategic grant objectives in the non-profit education sector. In collaboration with grant-making foundations, SV2 creates cohorts of collaborating grantees in a selected sector. I participate in site visits and due diligence to analyze potential grantee's business model, leadership and benefits to the education community. I work with Executive Directors of grantees to strengthen organizational capacity, financial health and conduct of its mission. SV2, a venture philanthropy partnership, is a donor network that leverages its financial, intellectual, and human capital to make meaningful, measurable, impact in Silicon Valley and beyond. SV2 does this by strengthening the service capacity of its grantees and the philanthropic capacity of its Partners.

We would like to thank our co-Lead Partner for all of his hard work in helping our graduating Grantees build capacity, think strategically through tough organizational challenges, and increase their impact: Harry Turner Partners in School Innovation, founded in 1993, is a non-profit organization committed to transforming teaching and learning in the lowest performing public schools so that every student, regardless of background, thrives.Over the past three years, PSI successfully transitioned from a regional organization that exclusively served the Bay Area to one with a national presence. During this time, PSI more than doubled the number of districts served while keeping costs under control and maintaining the quality of their high-touch offerings.To support this transition to national scale, PSI executed a multi-channel marketing strategy, which resulted in key partnerships with large-scale foundations such as the Kellogg Foundation. With the strategic help of SV2, PSI made progress on two of its greatest challenges: shifting its Board’s mindset from that of a regional organization to a national one and recruiting four new highly engaged Board members. After three years, PSI has emerged stronger and more effective with a replicable model for staffing and governance in the lowest-performing schools.

We contribute our capital and personal resources to mission driven projects sponsored by non-profit education, women's health, and land conservation organizations.A portion of The Family Fund' project portfolio is set forth below:Peninsula Open Space Trust - We partnered with POST to renovate a heritage 10-acre apple orchard and to adopt a long term management plan.College Track - We coinvested in creating College Track's first annual report in 2007. Subsequently we contributed a matching grant for College Track's "Investment in Growth" budget item for permanent grants manager. Subsequently College Track created a more diversified fundraising portfolio. Annual grant revenue increased to $1.1 million from $690,000.The increased capacity is in alignment with College Tracks higher objectives.Ace Charter School - ACE manages 5th-8th grade charter public middle schools. We assisted the Executive Director's preparation of ACE's 5-year business plan and we funded two milestones essential to securing a 45-year lease for ACE's first school site.Castilleja School Foundation - Castilleja School is an independent school for girls in grades six through twelve, located in Palo Alto, in the U.S. state of California. Castilleja is the only non-sectarian all-girls middle and high school in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mercado Global - Mercado Global empowers Guatemalan indigenous women to overcome poverty and become agents of change in their communities.San Francisco Ballet, Dance in the Schools and Community - Established in 1979, DISC currently provides a free interactive movement program to over 3,500 students in 38 San Francisco Unified School District Elementary Schools. Boston based Park Street Capital is an independent specialist in full-cycle management of private capital programs for family offices, endowments, foundations, and other non-profit organizations in the US and Europe. During my tenure at Park Street the firm's committed capital more than doubled to over $2 billion.

I co-founded the Stanford Management Company in 1981, served as interim CEO, organized the Company, and professionalized the endowment's investment practices in private equity, venture capital programs, and in natural resources. I initiated its strategies for international private equity. The venture capital programs substantially outperformed their industry and peer benchmarks and harvested $3 billion, a 5X return.During my interim CEO period and subsequently in the management committee I participated in managing strategic multi-asset allocation policy and managing public equity manager portfolios, domestic and international.Stanford's endowment investment performance ranked among the top five in the US persistently.

San Francisco Peninsula, San Mateo

During the five-year start-up period the Board and volunteers used funds from the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church and five lots donated by the County of San Mateo and committed prospective homeowners to build five homes and to structure a sustainable scaled-up Habitat for Humanity organization. When we began to plan larger multi-unit construction projects, but lacking necessary operational experience to continue as Board Chairman, I resigned in favor of an experienced construction manager and a successor ED.The scaled-up Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco's mission is to provide local families with a springboard to secure, stable futures through affordable home ownership, financial literacy and neighborhood revitalization. Habitat Greater San Francisco provides a hand-up, not a hand-out, for families in desperate need of improved living conditions. Its homeowners invest 500 hours of "sweat equity" to help build their own homes as well as additional time for homeowner workshops. Since the initial five home start in 1989-93 Habitat celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014 reflecting on enabling 250 families to build and purchase their first homes. Looking forward, it aspires to continue to expand its reach and impact.

I led the successful public campaign to add San Mateo county to the MROSD. I was elected to the Board and served from 1974 to 1985, 10-years of MROSD growth and innovative programs for public use of a large inventory of open space preserves.
