About Gerry Haskins

Software engineering leader experienced at building and managing global teams responsible for all aspects of software development.I am passionate about continuous improvement of the customer experience employing Lean, Agile and DevOps methodologies. I therefore tend to gravitate towards QA and Release Management roles.I ensure collaboration and short feedback loops between developers, ops, support and customers, driving continuous improvement of products and processes.I've built teams in Dublin, Prague, California and Bangalore, managing up to 60 software engineers and program managers worldwide.I hire the best people I can and grow and retain them. Many team members have worked with me for 10-15 years, growing from grads to lead engineers and senior managers. Indeed, several have followed me from company to company. My philosophy is simple: happy customers are more likely to be repeat customers. The goal I set each member of my team is to "improve our customers' experience in any way you can".RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS:* Overhauled NuoDB's global QA and Release Engineering teams, building a new and highly capable geo-dispersed QA team (Dublin, London, Zagreb). Reduced release candidate test case fails by >80%. My key quality metric is the ratio of bugs found by QA to bugs missed by QA and found by customers. The QA team have consistently hit a ratio of 4:1 over the past year. * Implemented DevOps and Lean methodologies in SG Digital as the company pivots from a bespoke T&M development model to a product model and expands into new markets. Introduced operational metrics, dashboards and reviews with each product/dev team, driving continuous improvement of our customers' experience.* Led the development of the SuperCluster engineered system providing cloud-in-a-rack IaaS, PaaS and DBaaS with revenues of $1bn+ in its first 6 years. Leveraged knowledge of technologies and configuration best practice to develop robust, secure, maintainable infrastructure-as-code.* Designed process simplifications and led the development of CI/CD automation and dashboards to manage the build, QA and release of products such as the Solaris operating system.* Led the release management of 37 Solaris Updates and the QA for over 70,000 Solaris patches. * Partnered cross-org to research, negotiate, design, and lead the development of common processes and tools to merge the code bases of two major Sun Microsystems software products, simplifying processes and improving quality.

Listed skills include Process Improvement, People Management, Operating Systems, Sdlc, and 46 others.

QA VP responsible for the quality of KX's new gen AI KDB.AI product as well as our highly scalable and performant cloud native time-series database, KDB Insights Enterprise. Both KDB.AI and KDB.IE are based on kdb+, the world's fastest time series database with nanosecond resolution and are widely used in Capital Markets, Aerospace and Defence, and High Tech Manufacturing (such as semi-conductor chip manufacturers). As a vector database written in the q array programming language, kdb+ is ideally suited to AI vector embedding. KDB.AI supports Flat, IVF, IVFPQ, and HNSW. Try it now by signing up on https://kdb.ai/.KDB Insights Enterprise is an enormously scalable and performant cloud native time series database, supported on AWS, GCP, Azure, and OpenShift, with a distributed micro-services architecture leveraging modern technologies including Kubernetes, Helm, and the Raft consensus algorithm. To give an idea of it's scalability, I typically ingest ~1.7Bn rows during a weekend Chaos Mesh resiliency (fault injection) test on a mid-sized cluster while killing random pods ever 3 minutes without data loss, whilst continuously querying data.I've built the QA team of 20 software engineers from scratch. Half the team are senior Python and/or Cypress test automation developers, and half are more junior but highly talented graduates. My passions are building teams, continuous process improvement, release management, and improving the quality of our customers' experience in any way I can.

Director, Quality Assurance And Release Engineering

NuoDB’s cloud agnostic horizontally scaling elastic ACID compliant SQL database is not just a mouthful, it's a highly resilient distributed SQL database used by some of the world's leading design houses and banks. For example, 50% of COVID-19 vaccines were designed on software using NuoDB. And 80% of the world's aircraft are designed on NuoDB.I'm responsible for Quality Assurance and Release Engineering, leveraging my extensive experience in both areas to improve our customers' experience in any way I can.I rebuilt the QA and RE teams with top class software engineers. Product quality in terms of resiliency, performance, and scalability has dramatically improved as a result. RE automation means we can now turn on a dime as needed.

2019 - Apr 2024

Vice President, Lifecycle Engineering

London, United Kingdom

I was VP Software Lifecycle Engineering in SG Digital which is a leading online gaming, lottery and sportsbook company with worldwide operations. The scale of online gaming is hard to comprehend. SG Digital gaming turnover is well over £20Bn a year and growing.I was involved in lots of transformational work. Lots of mergers, acquisitions, and breaking into huge new markets. And more Lean, Agile and DevOps than you could shake a stick at!Lifecycle Engineering involves the continuous improvement of processes, quality, release engineering, supportability and maintainability of software products. It leverages Lean elimination of waste is all its forms, Agile (SAFe, Scrum, Kanban), and DevOps (People [mindset] / Process [simplification] / Tools [automation]). It focuses on business (£ $ €) and customer first (CX) systems thinking to break down siloed thinking into cross functional end-to-end customer focused thinking. It’s fun, it works, and you should try it!

2018 - 2019 ~1 yr

Director, Software Engineering

County Dublin, Ireland

Oracle's Software Engineering Center in Dublin is responsible for the development and QA of products such as the Solaris Operating System and SuperCluster Engineered System for global enterprise customers.I lead an experienced team of over 50 software engineers and program managers in the US, Ireland, UK, and Czech Republic, many of whom have been with me for the last 10-15 years. We're involved in all aspects of the software engineering process from product development to QA, process automation, program management, security, release engineering, maintenance and working closely with support and customers on issue resolution and issue prevention best practice.I've led the development of the SuperCluster Engineered System from its inception, providing cloud-in-a-rack IaaS and DBaaS with total revenue of $1bn+ over the last 6 years, leveraging my team's technology and configuration best practice experience to provide infrastructure-as-code.I directly lead the team responsible for the design and implementation of the internal processes and tools used to develop and maintain Oracle Systems products. I'm a passionate believer in the KISS principle. Anyone can invent complex process. The key is lean process simplification to improve efficiency without negatively impacting effectiveness, and automating the heck out of it. We use Grails, Python / Django, Jenkins, Hg, PHP, and MySQL, with RESTful web services enabling the various tools to "talk" to each other. I define the maintenance strategy for Solaris and SuperCluster, including delivery vehicles, cadence and content, presenting best practices at conferences and via blogs, podcasts and white papers.I'm also responsible for resolving critical executive escalations (typically for our top 50 global enterprise customers) when the normal support channels have failed. This involves engaging with customers at a C-level, resolving the issues at hand, rebuilding trust and undertaking initiatives to prevent recurrence.

RESTful web services provide rich metadata for dashboards with drill-down capabilities for both operational metrics and incident management.Established global cross-functional collaboration with product management, engineering, pre-sales and customer support to ensure short “shift-left” feedback loops to identify quality improvement opportunities.Defined and implemented production release maintenance strategies to improve the quality of the customer experience. Defined release vehicles, cadence and content. Designed rapid release vehicles to address “zero day” notification and vendor-coordinated security vulnerabilities. Promoted best practice via conferences, blogs, podcasts and white papers.Led quarterly executive Ops Reviews in California on product quality and recommendations for continuous improvement. Manager / Senior Manager, Development, Qa And Release Engineering

County Dublin, Ireland

I built and led XML Web Services team which developed the XML utilities delivered in Solaris. Used XP methodology.I recruited and led the Patch System Test team, enhancing test effectiveness with over 50% of all patching bugs consistently discovered pre-release.I built and lead system test and release engineering teams in Prague as a lower cost location to complement existing US teams. I got the teams working as one through cross-training, collaborative projects and simply not allowing a them-and-us attitude to develop.Over the years I've managed the release quality of 74 monthly Solaris operating system maintenance releases, 37 Solaris Update feature releases, and 4,500+ patches per annum, reducing the bad patch rate for from over 4% to < 1% through QA, issue analysis, and continuous process improvement. For example, I improved the Solaris 10 Kernel patch release rate from 18% to 90% for x86 and from 32% to 87% for SPARC by redesigning the code integration and source management processes, resolving release quality issues caused by immature feature integrations.
