Oracle's Software Engineering Center in Dublin is responsible for the development and QA of products such as the Solaris Operating System and SuperCluster Engineered System for global enterprise customers.I lead an experienced team of over 50 software engineers and program managers in the US, Ireland, UK, and Czech Republic, many of whom have been with me for the last 10-15 years. We're involved in all aspects of the software engineering process from product development to QA, process automation, program management, security, release engineering, maintenance and working closely with support and customers on issue resolution and issue prevention best practice.I've led the development of the SuperCluster Engineered System from its inception, providing cloud-in-a-rack IaaS and DBaaS with total revenue of $1bn+ over the last 6 years, leveraging my team's technology and configuration best practice experience to provide infrastructure-as-code.I directly lead the team responsible for the design and implementation of the internal processes and tools used to develop and maintain Oracle Systems products. I'm a passionate believer in the KISS principle. Anyone can invent complex process. The key is lean process simplification to improve efficiency without negatively impacting effectiveness, and automating the heck out of it. We use Grails, Python / Django, Jenkins, Hg, PHP, and MySQL, with RESTful web services enabling the various tools to "talk" to each other. I define the maintenance strategy for Solaris and SuperCluster, including delivery vehicles, cadence and content, presenting best practices at conferences and via blogs, podcasts and white papers.I'm also responsible for resolving critical executive escalations (typically for our top 50 global enterprise customers) when the normal support channels have failed. This involves engaging with customers at a C-level, resolving the issues at hand, rebuilding trust and undertaking initiatives to prevent recurrence.

I built and led XML Web Services team which developed the XML utilities delivered in Solaris. Used XP methodology.I recruited and led the Patch System Test team, enhancing test effectiveness with over 50% of all patching bugs consistently discovered pre-release.I built and lead system test and release engineering teams in Prague as a lower cost location to complement existing US teams. I got the teams working as one through cross-training, collaborative projects and simply not allowing a them-and-us attitude to develop.Over the years I've managed the release quality of 74 monthly Solaris operating system maintenance releases, 37 Solaris Update feature releases, and 4,500+ patches per annum, reducing the bad patch rate for from over 4% to < 1% through QA, issue analysis, and continuous process improvement.For example, I improved the Solaris 10 Kernel patch release rate from 18% to 90% for x86 and from 32% to 87% for SPARC by redesigning the code integration and source management processes, resolving release quality issues caused by immature feature integrations.

I was responsible for systems integration development and maintenance for Kindle Banking System's Bankmaster and BranchPower retail banking products.I developed an extension for the Informix C-ISAM database to overcome file size limitations which were impacting some of our large customer banks.I ported the products to 19 Operating System versions from 13 vendors. I devised a repeatable and reproducible process enabling the ports to complete in under an hour.I started in Kindle as a developer in the System's Integration and Development group. I was subsequently promoted to team leader and then manager. I also took over management of the Release Engineering team in addition to the development team.Kindle was acquired by Misys during my tenure.When Misys decided to off-shore development on cost grounds, I hired and trained my replacement team in India.
