About Heather Ahern
Ahern is the current Artistic Director of Aerplaye, a dance company. A recent graduate of Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training, Ahern is known for her athletic, fluid, at times humorous, movement style, Ahern's work explores the pure joy of movement, and probes what it means to be human. She was a founding member of Groundwerx Dance Theatre, Providence, RI, where she co-directed, toured, performed, and taught for fifteen years. Ahern is a past recipient of three grants from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts; an Artist Project Grant for the creation of a one-woman dance/play entitled Amazons, Goddesses and Others, an Individual Artist Grant for the creation of an evening long work entitled In Full Flight - an Exploration of the Dance of the Modern Traveler, and a project grant for a work-in-progress solo dance/play entitled 100 Years of Disquietude, Love in the Time of Corona. She is a past three time recipient of a Cirino Fellowship from the Rhode Island Foundation; and the recipient of an Annenberg Foundation grant for scholarly study at the University of Southern California. In addition to the creation of modern dance, and ballet choreography, Ahern has worked as a movement consultant and choreographer for Perishable Theatre and Trinity Repertory Theatre, Providence, RI. Ahern performed, taught, and choreographed work for a variety of populations at colleges, universities and other educational institutions throughout the country. She has taught at California State University, Long Beach; West Virginia University (where she also directed the dance program); and Long Beach City College, teaching a wide variety of classes from dance technique to dance history. She holds a BA in Dance from Roger Williams University, an MFA in Dance from California State University Long Beach, and is a certified Pilates instructor, with specialization in dance conditioning from Body Arts and Science International, Costa Mesa, CA, and holds a certification in Progressing Ballet Technique. She is currently a professor at Rhode Island College dance program, and teaches Pilates at Club Pilates in East Greenwich RI.
