Profile bio

About Heather Chick

I have recently joined the European Consortium Neutrocure as a post-doctoral researcher interested in targeted ROS amplification in neutrophils as a means of controlling a variety of infectious and autoimmune disorders. Our current methods focus on Mass Spectrometry analysis of key immunomodulatory oxysterols and functional outputs of targeted ROS amplification. I have previously worked as a lecturer at Swansea University in Microbiology and Infectious Disease and Biomedical Sciences on the GenBio and AMS degree programmes. My research interests are primarily in host-pathogen relationships and the factors that contribute to severe disease in a range of bacterial pathogens. I form part of the BBSRC-funded CampAttack consortium, whose research is focused on the factors that lead to extra-intestinal spread of Campylobacter jejuni to edible tissues in broiler chickens. My main focus within this project is to understand the immune interactions in the chicken gut and how certain conditions lead to extraintestinal spread. My other research interests are focused on coinfection and how immune activation pathways play a role in disease severity, and on the immune and microbiological conditions that contribute to Escherichia coli ascension in the urinary tract and the development of systemic disease. I obtained my PhD in Medicine from Swansea University in 2020, and my thesis focused on using an ex vivo whole blood model in order to improve the understanding and diagnosis of bacterial sepsis.
