Kalju Kahn Group | Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry [Computational Chemistry]• Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) is a type of infrared spectroscopy that is useful for the characterization of configuration and conformation of chiral molecules. Because the VCD spectra of enantiomers are mirror images, one can readily identify the absolute stereochemistry of an enantiomerically pure sample by comparing its VCD spectrum with the known spectrum of one of the enantiomers. Quantitative analysis of the observed spectrum of a mixture of two enantiomers allows to one to calculate the enantiomeric excess of the sample. Temperature-dependence of the VCD spectrum can reveal the conformational complexity of the chiral compound. The interpretation of experimental VCD spectra is greatly aided by quantum mechanical calculations that are able to predict the VCD spectrum for any given chiral structure. Thus, it is common that the experimental VCD work is accompanied by computational modeling.• The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has acquired a new infrared spectrometer (Thermo Fisher Nicolet iS 50R) along with the VCD module (Thermo Fisher PM-VCD) that that will be used for a variety of projects involving organic and bioorganic molecules. This is first of its kind instrument at UC Santa Barbara. This proposal focuses on performing supporting computational studies. In particular: (1) Methodologies for efficient and accurate calculation of VCD spectra of chiral compounds will be worked out, (2) A software workflow will be created that will allow non-experts to submit their molecules of interest to a computational server and retrieve the calculated spectrum.• Languages: Python 2.7, Mathematica, Unix shell scripts, Slurm• Software: Gaussian16, MOLDEN, PyVib2, SpecDis, SpecTech2, TurboMole, PyMol[This research was funded by the Edison 2018 Summer Research Program and the College of Creative Studies Summer Undergraduate Fellowship (CCS-SUF) 2019.]

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Storeroom provides support, supplies and services to all Chemistry and Biochemistry research/instructional labs, as well as research/instructional labs across our campus. The Storeroom stocks hundreds of chemicials and laboratory supplies; we also serve as the campus wide PPE distribution center. We also provide purchasing assistance in and outside of Gateway, as well as shipping and receiving services, to all DCB faculty, researchers, and students.

The Disabled Students Program provides academic support services to students with documented disabilities by providing alternate study materials, exam accommodations, and more. As a proctor, I act as a liason between the clients and their instructor while maintaining the integrity of the testing environment and ensuring that the client receives the correct accommodation. Exams are situated in alternate locations and may require providing additional support through use of a laptop, recording the client's responses, or reading aloud to the client. Proctors are required to attend quarterly training and must proctor a minimum of 4 midterms and 3 finals each academic quarter.As a notetaker, I take clear, detailed notes (either hand-written or typed) for an ongoing course and upload them to an online portal accessible to clients.

Maribel Rios Research Group | Department of Neuroscience, Sackler School of Biomedical Sciences• The Rios lab uses molecular, biochemical, electrophysiological, behavioral and genetic tools to ascertain the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the modulation of energy homeostasis and affective behavior. For this, we generate and study mice with central or site-specific deletion of the BDNF gene. Our efforts are focused on defining neural circuits in the brain modulated by BDNF to control appetite and affective states and the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the actions of this neurotrophin. • I investigated the feeding state dependency of inhibitory synaptic dynamics in the ventromedial hypothalamus as a participant in the Building Diversity in Biomedical Sciences (BDBS) Program.• Techniques: Cryostat tissue sectioning, qPCR, tail-snip genotyping, perfusion, tissue dissection, indirect immunofluoresence, bright-field and confocal microscopy, ImageJ, GraphPad Prism.[This research was supported by National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health under award number R01DK113445 and award number R01DK117935.
