About Heather Mcsherry

Accomplished young professional passionate about supporting communities in the planning, response, and recovery stages of disaster relief. Highly organized with experience in emergency management. Demonstrated history of working with, managing, and leading diverse groups of individuals in a wide variety of settings.---Most recently, I worked as an outreach coordinator at Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank. I was able to wear many different hats - from managing volunteers at the warehouse, ordering and packing food for distribution, delivering food to clients throughout the island, chatting with clients about their life circumstances, and finding and supporting the houseless community here on Long Island. I was able to learn so much from the clients that I served. Before working at the Food Bank, I was heavily involved in disaster relief. While food insecurity and hunger are in itself their own types of disasters, I wanted to continue to be involved in the disaster relief and emergency management community. Previously, I completed a 6 week training course and am a Nassau County CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Member. In addition, I also completed training with the Red Cross to become a Mass Care: Sheltering volunteer. In the case of an emergency, I may be called to set up sheltering and feeding operations with the Red Cross, participate in a Search and Rescue operation with CERT, or even become a “1st responder” in my community by performing first aid before emergency personnel arrive. I find that being a part of emergency response organizations is an important way to stay connected and support my local communities. Thankfully, I have not had to respond to an emergency. However, the training, community, connections, and friends I’ve been able to make through these organizations all make me proud.

Listed skills include 2D Cell Culturing, Cell Counting, Media Preparation, Centrifugation, and 20 others.
