About Heidi Ruff
I began at PNNL in January of 2022. Riding the wake of the pandemic, I transitioned careers and accepted a position as a technical coordinator in Safeguards and Security. In a short span of time, I’ve been challenged to adapt my professional skills to new applications, leveraging my attention to detail, my project management ability, and my problem-solving mindset as it pertains to my role. My formal education includes two degrees from Central Washington University in Graphic Design and Writing. I have additional coursework in Computer Science and Information Technology at Central and Columbia Basin College. I’m currently enrolled in a bachelor’s program for Cybersecurity and Information Assurance as I endeavor to develop my education in the security field. I have obtained my CompTIA A+/Sec+/Net+/Project+ certifications and the Axelos ITIL 4 certification for IT management. In my previous positions, I worked as a graphic designer, chiefly creating award-winning collateral for local small businesses. If it can fall under the marketing umbrella, I have probably done it. From marketing lead and social media manager to IT technician and web developer, I have worn many hats. These positions leveraged my versatility, technical skills and interpersonal skills, business sense and creativity. It’s a pleasure to be a part of the lab, and I look forward to future collaborations.
Listed skills include Illustrator, Logo Design, Adobe Creative Suite, Layout, and 13 others.

Technical Coordinator Iii
CurrentGraphic Design And Marketing Lead
Beginning as the Marketing Assistant for NWAS, I was quickly promoted to Marketing Lead. In this position I supervised my assistants and prioritized workloads as needed. I coordinated with multiple departments to meet company objectives, organized calendars and schedules, and fulfilled company goals both internal and external. I was responsible for production, planning, and content curation for online and print marketing materials including website maintenance with light coding tasks (HTML/CSS/PHP), brochures, mass mailers, editorials, large format banners, flyers, posters, letterhead, booklets, fillable forms, document conversion, photo editing, Powerpoint presentations, and more. I have experience using commercial printers, folding, trimming, and mailing machines. I was an administrator of internet advertising accounts and social media marketing including Facebook, Instagram, and Google Ads, as well as mass e-mail marketing campaigns. I was also responsible for recording and sending automated phone communications. In 2018, I attended the week-long ExhibitorLive! conference in Las Vegas for additional training in effective exhibit marketing and exhibit space design. In February 2020, I worked our company’s exhibit booth at the Society of Critical Care’s annual congress where I collected potential customer leads and promoted our brand. In addition to my graphic design and marketing tasks, I perform tasks including software and hardware installation, help desk troubleshooting, and research.
Graphic Designer
Starting as a part-time freelance designer, I was eventually hired as the full-time design and production lead at NWHYP. In this position, I was responsible for all aspects of the La Guía Dorada telephone directories. Tasks included data entry for all liner ads, creation of all in-column ads, directory layout, cover design, and pre-press preparations tailored to press specifications. I coordinated with the sales team and their clients so that ads were built to suit and adhered to any existing corporate branding if applicable. If branding did not exist, custom logos and copy were provided. In addition to my design duties, I functioned as the manager’s assistant and supervisor of our in-house telemarketing team. I was also responsible for opening and closing, distributing payroll, reception, and answering phones on occasion.
Graphic Designer
As part of the production department, I built the majority of new ads from concept to finish for three publications: Nickel Nik, a weekly classified paper; Wheel Deals, a weekly automotive book; and Homefront, a monthly real estate book. Additionally, I created loose inserts and pages for the quarterly supplements for these publications. Some examples include the Northwest Happenings and Destination Washington books.I paginated and proofread Wheel Deals weekly and assisted with proofing Nickel Nik and Homefront. I was also responsible for file conversion, all custom graphics, and photo editing. I wrote copy and headlines for special promotions including sponsorship ads, holiday sales, and local events. With several deadlines to meet every week, coordination with the sales team, their customers, and the designers of other publications was essential to our publications being sent to the press on time and without errors. These tasks required excellent communication and time management skills. When necessary, I was responsible for answering phones, receiving customers, taking ad specifications, and computer support and repair. I was also asked to travel to assist other regional office when short-staffed which required me to adapt to other systems quickly. Other tasks included use of general office equipment, light cleaning, and production of forms and materials for office use.
Designer / Sign Maker / Customer Service
At Signs Now my main duties were sign assembly, design, and customer service. On occasion I handled invoicing, sign installation, equipment maintenance, and cleaning. I learned to use several kinds of equipment including cutting plotters for vinyl, vinyl printers, saws for cutting substrates, and the software used in communicating with those devices.
Intern
After completing my degree coursework, I spent my internship at Sara Nelson Design in downtown Kennewick. I created logos, signage, event materials, and custom illustrations for print and web. I was given the opportunity on several occasions to help conceptualize and create mock-ups for both recently acquired and troublesome projects. Some of our clients included Breshears Professional Photography, Good Shepherd Healthcare, Kadlec Medical Center, Northwest Agri Products, and the Pasco Chamber of Commerce. Other duties included reception of clients in person or by phone during employer’s absence, sending out for quotes, choosing and ordering project materials, and running errands.
