Following a career in practice, I now work in tax policy for the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT). As one of the small team of technical officers, my role is focused on the latest developments in tax, responding to consultations, commenting on draft legislation and representing the ATT at meetings with HMRC and HMT. Drawing on the knowledge and experience of our members I work with HMRC to try and improve everyone's experience of dealing with their tax affairs. This can include identifying unintended consequences, raising practical concerns with systems, processes or HMRC guidance, and writing articles and guidance notes to support ATT members. As an experienced tax practitioner I have been asked to comment on tax matters on BBC South news, BBC Radio 4's Money Box, BBC Radio 5 Live's 'Wake up to Money' and many BBC local radio stations (including my local station - BBC Cumbria). I have been quoted in the Financial Times, The Times and Sunday Times and I also write regularly for a range of tax and accounting publications including Tax Adviser, AccountingWEB, Accountancy Age and Taxation. While the day job is very much about the latest developments in tax, I am also interested in tax history. I have presented widely on my researches into the Women's Tax Resistance League, a group which campaigned for the vote under the banner 'No Vote, No Tax'. I have also written about the life and work of Ethel Watts, the first woman admitted to ICAEW by examination after the ICAEW was finally forced to admit women following the passing of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act of 1919.Specialties: Tax Policy.
