About Howard Sherman

HOWARD SHERMAN is the author of "Another Day's Begun: Thornton Wilder's Our Town in the 21st Century," published in January 2021 by Methuen Drama. He also edited "The 24 Hour Plays Viral Monologues," a series of works he inspired, for Methuen. Since March 2022, he has been the managing director of the Baruch Performing Arts Center, a two venue presenting facility at Baruch College in Manhattan's Flatiron district. He is director of the Arts Integrity Initiative, a program he created in 2015 arising out of his arts advocacy work, initially based at The New School of Drama and now operating independently. He spent a year with SDC, Stage Directors & Choreographers Society establishing a communications department for the union, prior to which he was Interim Director, for three years, at the Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts, which advocates on behalf of artists of color and artists with disabilities in film, TV and theatre. He spent eight years as executive director of the American Theatre Wing, where his responsibilities included serving as executive producer and moderator of the TV program Working in the Theatre; creating and hosting the audio program "Downstage Center"; and serving on the Tony Awards Management and Administration Committees. He was instrumental in development of ATW’s National Theatre Company Grants.He spent three years as Executive Director of the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, leading its educational and developmental programs, shepherding $1 million worth of physical plant upgrades, and re-branding the organization. He was Managing Director of Geva Theater in Rochester, where he completed a $6 million capital campaign and opened the company’s Nextstage. As General Manager of Goodspeed Musicals, he worked on 24 new & classic musicals, including Ayckbourn & Lloyd Webber's "By Jeeves." As Public Relations Director of Hartford Stage, he represented 50 shows.He is U.S. correspondent for The Stage in London, contributing editor at Stage Directions magazine, and his writing has appeared in such outlets as Slate, The Guardian, American Theatre magazine, and NPR's website.He has taught and/or guest lectured at Yale School of Drama, NC School of the Arts, Emerson College, and Brooklyn College. He is a leading advocate against censorship and for artists' rights, in high school, university, community and professional theatre.
