Disability Rights North Carolina is an independent, private not for profit organization. Designated by the Governor on July 1, 2007 to ensure the rights of all state citizens with disabilities through individual advocacy and system change, Disability Rights NC (formerly Carolina Legal Assistance) is part of a national system of federally mandated independent disability agencies. While we receive federal money, Disability Rights NC is completely independent of state government. We are also independent from the disability service system in order to be free of any conflicts of interests, which would undermine our capacity to advocate vigorously on behalf of the human and legal rights of people with disabilities.Our committed board of directors, advisory council and staff members are among the strongest advocates in the state. We value the dignity of ALL people and their freedom to control their own lives and work for justice upholding the fundamental rights of people with disabilities to live free from harm in the communities of their choice, with the opportunity to participate fully and equally in society.Starting as a "special client program" at Dorothea Dix Hospital within Legal Services of North Carolina and evolving into a nonprofit mental disability law project, Disability Rights NC is now the only statewide legal non-profit disability advocacy organization serving all persons with disabilities. Disability Rights NC helps people across North Carolina gain access to services and opportunity through its advocacy and legal expertise. We regularly challenge systems and society to create positive change and improve the lives of people with disabilities. The agency also works on disability issues with state and local governments.
