I joined the project from pre-startup and as such was involved with the establishment of the traffic team and resources.As traffic engineer I was responsible for the planning and delivery of Traffic Management Plans by the design team used by the construction teams. Further to this I was responsible for planning and managing the implementation team to ensure that adequate resources and timing was available for works to be completed. All of these had to be delivered ensuring correct sign off by all stakeholders and team members.As part of the traffic team I became involved with the Main Roads’ Innovations Team where new traffic devices and methods were tabled and put forward for use on Western Australian job sites. I personally put forward designs and concepts for the use of temporary variable speed signs for use across work sites which removed workers from the road and increased set-up/pull down times for traffic zones.

My main remit was the management of the subcontractors and suppliers for the reinforcement package. This was the delivery of over 14,000tonne of tied reinforcement which included heavy pre-fabricated cages and base beams to minimise tying time on site. I additionally did weekly programming to ensure the caisson team were well aware of the critical path and that resources were correctly allocated.Additional to the reinforcement works I assisted the site team in a variety of works; I designed a lifting bracket that could be fixed to scissor lifts that enabled the safe lifting of multiple radius bars to more efficiently tie wall reo. I also held weekly programming training session for Site & Graduate engineers. Designed car park and pile lay down areas to receive over 1200t of steel piles.

The pre-start phase involved liaising and approvals with various councils and government bodies, assisting environment and Community teams to ensure a timely delivery of start up once project approval was received. Additional to this I managed contracts for residential and commercial building dilapidation reports, road condition survey & building hire contracts.After the set up phase was complete my responsibilities moved to the widening of a 160m – 5 span viaduct, widening of a existing main road overpass and construction of 1km of raft slabs to accommodate the new on off ramps. AlThe viaduct widening was constructed over an existing forested gorge and creek, access and environment posed the biggest challenges, the piers were built using a peri climbing scaffold system, bridge deck was of the Super-T design with drainage installed pre lifting to minimise working at heights.The main road overpass widening was consisted of 20 Super-T’s installed to newly constructed abutment and pier, all works work conducted with minimal impact to existing traffic flows. To stitch the existing and new bridges together a high early strength concrete was used.Raft slab works entailed to piling of appx. 180 bored cast in place piles through previously placed fill and construction of raft slab.

The works consist of a pre-cast under bridge at the Bankstown line, a top down cast in place extension of existing road, pile walls, shotcreting and major earthworks. A major part of the job has been to successfully plan around existing services and live train lines. I organised two of the major possession milestones. The placing and stitching of headstocks underneath the Bankstown line and placing of pre-cast bridge planks, both these involved careful planning for cranes and sequencing.

The New Durban Stadium is one of the iconic stadiums of the 2010 soccer world cup built to an award winning standard under a strict timeframe. The stadium is a 75,000 seated stadium with the ability to host a possible future Olympics.

Throughout construction full operation of the Freeway had to be maintained through careful traffic control planning. I brought to this project a shift in safety thinking when working with live and ensured that people/traffic were separated at all time in country where safety at the time was in its infancy.
