I was promoted to the Healthcare Professional role after a year at CCPM. I am now experienced in TaqMan PCR, DNA fragment analysis, DNA Sanger sequencing, DNA extraction, microarray genotyping, and a variety of other processes and workflows. I am currently involved with our GI Oncology pilot - a clinical pharmacogenetic test that allows us to evaluate cancer patients for variants that affect their ability to properly metabolize their chemotherapy medication. I am also the lead technologist of an ongoing research project with a partnered biotech company. Outside of the laboratory, I deal with electronic medical records for our clinical processes, I manage product ordering, and I design the weekly meeting agenda for our team.

I used to work as one of the lead COVID-19 lab techs at our facility and was responsible for extracting viral RNA from infectious samples and running them through qPCR for clinical resulting. I was also involved in our standard bio-repository functions such as DNA quantification via the Quantifluor assay and Sanger sequencing.

I worked alongside Dr. Jason Duncan and other biology students on a large-scale mutagenic screen on the 3rd chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster targeting the Actin Depolymerizing factor (ADF) and cofilin ortholog slingshot. I prepared fly food, expanded Drosophila stocks, set up genetic crosses, and analyzed progeny for desired traits.

My role as a fitness center staff member was to help maintain a clean and safe workplace for all faculty and students who attend our fitness center, basketball courts, and soccer field. Regular duties included checking out equipment, wiping down machines, sweeping, and completing rounds of the entire facility.

While studying abroad in Spain, I interned at the Hospital HLA Inmaculada. During this four month program, I had the chance to interact and communicate with doctors and patients (all in Spanish). These conversations increased my understanding of basic healthcare provider responsibilities and gave me a different perspective on the healthcare system as a whole. I was also able to stand in on many surgical procedures - an opportunity that is not common for undergraduates in the United States.
