Technical lead within the Hydrogen Capability Network (HCN) team at the ATI, with the aim of accelerating the development of Liquid Hydrogen Aircraft technologies within the UK aerospace sector.Focused on developing a technical strategy through engagement across industry and academia and alignment with the international landscape. Working on the development, planning and delivery of a number of targeted interventions across a liquid hydrogen fundamentals research programme targeting the low TRL pre-normative research to enable the development of higher TRL technologies.

Primary investigator on NCC Composite Cryogenic Tanks Core Projects (sponsored by industry NCC members) securing amongst the most funding annually of any Core project and included sponsorship from tier 2 members.Responsible for directing and carrying out research, developing test methods for cryogenic testing of composites. This included characterising the impact of material, design, manufacturing and testing variables across testing in liquid nitrogen and liquid helium.Developed a novel cryogenic composite fracture toughness characterisation, involving in-situ optical microcrack monitoring at cryogenic temperatures under tensile loading.Cryogenic expert within the NCC, consulting on numerous other projects including the development of a liquid hydrogen (LH2) tank demonstrator through the design, manufacture and LH2 testing phases.

Completed a Six Sigma Project under the guidance of a Black Belt to improve the output of a nozzle guide vane grinding operation. Successfully implemented a CMM programme change, order for new fixtures, and modified inspection routine to reduce rework from 30% to less than 5%. Undertook audits to ensure process compliance with work instructions and international standards throughout the facility. Carried out an investigation into the introduction of contaminants in material coatings utilising control trials, lab inspection, and liaising with external partners.

Worked alongside a senior engineer to understand composite manufacturing processes that were in the development stage, in order to specify, order, and layout the equipment for a new composites factory being built by Rolls-Royce on the Bristol site.

The only apprentice to be selected to join Design and Make graduate programme to work with three graduate engineers responding to an internal client brief. The project focused on advancement of labyrinth seal technology. This entailed the design, manufacture and test of labyrinth seals including the construction of a dedicated rig and the use of Oxford University’s Thermofluids Laboratory. Elected project manager for the team and presented both interim and final findings to a panel of Roll Royce senior managers and engineers.
