Role required sensitivity and diplomacy and the ability to present complex issues clearly and concisely to a diverse multicultural audience. The new governance structure of Fairtrade in which the three Producer Networks from Africa, Asia and Latin America/Caribbean have equal ownership rights alongside the founding market-facing organisations in Europe and North America is a lasting legacy of this period. The new model has shifted the position of farmers and workers from beneficiaries of a traditional charitable model to one in which they are equal partners in a global social enterprise.
