About Indranil Roy

Physics | Philosophy | People | PoetryMy passion is to reverse engineer intelligence as observed in nature. We call it natural intelligence, in contrast to artificial intelligence. In nature, intelligent systems can continuously learn in very chaotic and evolving environments, using noisy sensors and computing architecture using a miniscule fraction of the power of modern AI systems. To mimic such capabilities, we must rethink our computing architectures, data representation and learning-model from the ground up!Before this, my work experience spans from embedded systems to supercomputers. I love to study and build elegant algorithms for challenging tasks. My Ph.D. dissertation was awarded the best dissertation award from Georgia Tech's School of Computational Science and Engineering for 2015. Several of my publications have won best paper awards. In my free time I love to study and build model airplanes, play tennis, hike and read poetry.

Indranil Roy Work Experience Details
  • Natural Intelligence Semiconductor
Senior Vice President Of Research And Development
Natural Intelligence Semiconductor Jul 2017 - Present
    Boise, Idaho Area
I am a founding member and Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Natural Intelligence Systems. My team is developing an innovative Neuromorphic Artificial Intelligence (NAI) system with revolutionary 3rd wave AI capabilities. NAI is the integration of brain-inspired computational theory, learning algorithms, and data structures with an innovative non-von Neumann device architecture called the Natural Neural Processor. I am also the Principal Investigator of a related project under DARPA's Artificial Intelligence Exploration (AIE) Virtual Intelligence Program (VIP).
  • Georgia Institute Of Technology
    Research Scientist Ii
Georgia Institute Of Technology Dec 2016 - Jul 2017
Senior researcher in US Department of Energy's (US-DOE) High Performance Data Analytics (HPDA) program. This was multi-university and multi-national lab project to develop Accelerate Big Data Analytics using High Performance Computing. Led research within Georgia Tech to develop novel high-performance capabilities for identifying graph-patterns using the Micron Automata Processor (AP). The developed algorithm where made available through the STINGER graph analysis framework.
  • Micron Technology
    Application Architect, Automata Processor
    Micron Technology Jun 2015 - Nov 2016
I was in charge of internal and external research of use of the Automata Processor for various applications. these applications were related to network security, bioinformatics, graph algorithms, data analytics, semiconductor manufacturing, experimental physics etc. During this project, I interacted with researchers and project managers of various govt. agencies, national labs, universities and industrial businesses.
  • Georgia Institute Of Technology
    Research Assistant
Georgia Institute Of Technology Aug 2013 - May 2015
Working towards my doctoral dissertation (first in the world related to Micron Automata Processor), I led the research on algorithm and applications design on the AP. Before this work, the APs usage was limited to network security. Through my dissertation, the applicability was broadened to Graph Analytics, Bioinformatics, Formal Verification, Cybersecurity, etc. My dissertation was received the best dissertation ward for the graduating year from Georgia Tech, and These algorithms and techniques developed have since been used by others in a wide variety of applications like natural language processing, machine learning etc.
  • Micron Technology
    Intern
    Micron Technology May 2014 - Jun 2014
I studied the acceleration of two applications that require searching for all occurrences of thousands of string-patterns in an input data-stream, using the Automata Processor (AP). The first application, called Fast-SNAP (for Fast-SNort using AP), scans network data for signatures of intrusion. And the other, called PROTOMATA (for PROTein autOMATA), looks for all occurrences of protein motifs protein sequences. Using the resources of a single AP board, both these applications are roughly 10,000 times faster than a single-CPU-based counterpart.
  • Iowa State University
    Research Assistant
Iowa State University Aug 2008 - May 2013
Working towards my Masters thesis I helped in the design and development of compile-time and run-time error detection tool (UPC-Check) for Unified Parallel C. My most salient work in this project was related to deadlock detection. Deadlock detection in large parallel programs are extremely difficult because a timeout-based method are uninformative and preemptive checks are extremely time intensive. I developed an efficient algorithm which not only detected the deadlock condition before it occurred allowing an informative error message, but was also orders of magnitude faster than any existing technique. The tool and the algorithm was adopted by US-DOE in their UPC-based systems and similar approaches were explored for other parallel programming environments.
  • Ittiam Systems Pvt Ltd
    Engineer
Ittiam Systems Pvt Ltd May 2006 - Jul 2008
At this time, portable multimedia players were just breaking into the market and audio/video playout and power management was a critical requirement given the processing power and battery technology of the time. My work was related to the playout of .wma and .wmv file formats and overall power management of the devices. These solutions were part of various successful handheld and in-car/in-flight entertainment systems from Creative, Panasonic, Sony, Microsoft etc.
