Iris Schauerman, M.Ed. is a Director, LAYC/Maryland Multicultural Youth Center at Latin American Youth Center. I met Iris during my first week of my 3rd year of undergrad. As a transfer student taking my classes at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) I was attending a student organization fair at USG and noticed there was not an active Latinx Student Association (LSA). A friend and I were completely in the dark about how to start this organization but luckily Iris was present and immediately provided her full support to helping us get the organization going! During the next semesters my organization was able to conduct several item and food donations to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter, Latin American Youth Center, and Audelia Community Response Team (ACRT). Our most impressive food donation of 100 prepared meals to ACRT which were distributed to Langley Park low-income and homeless individuals. Additionally the LSA was able to spread cultural awareness in hosting a civic engagement on the stigmatization of immigration and immigrants in the US. Our civic engagement included a panel with immigration attorneys, immigrant youth and professionals, and organizations like CASA (De Maryland). All of this could not have been possible without the overflow of support from Iris. The best part about having Iris’ support was how noticeable it was that all her efforts came from her heart and not just because it was her job. Staff members like Iris are so crucial to a students’ growth. Since knowing Iris it has been an amazing experience to grow as a student and leader through the genuine dedication she has puts forth into my personal success. Though Iris is not at USG anymore, she continues to support students like me through mentorship, providing her personal recommendations and always thinking of others to present them with leadership opportunities. I have had the greatest luck to cross paths with Iris and am forever indebted to her never ending support, kindness and generosity. "
