As a graduate student I researched how bacterial pathogens bypass plant defenses. I conducted a yeast two hybrid screen to identify plant immune targets of bacterial virulence proteins, and performed a genetic complementation screen to investigate the molecular mechanisms of plant pathogen surveillance. Outside of the lab I presented at conferences, assisted in teaching classes, and participated in departmental committees.

Worked on a multidisciplinary team of microbiologists, chemists, and computational scientists to identify and isolate bioactive natural products. Extracted DNA from gram positive and gram negative bacteria for PacBio sequencing, prepared specialty media for growth of diverse microbes, and carried out bacterial fermentations.

Assisted on several breeding projects developing flavour qualities and disease resistance in crop plants using genomic variant mining techniques. Performed high throughput DNA extractions using liquid handling robots, conducted genotyping PCRs, and prepared DNA amplicons for Illumina sequencing. Additionally I assisted in planning layouts for grow-out experiments, and worked with growers and farm crew staff to plant, grow, and maintain experimental plant populations.

Investigated genetic mechanisms underlying plant responses to drought and nutritional stress. Developed a protocol for using Virus Induced Gene Silencing in Eutrema salsugineum to studying the function of an unknown gene of interest implicated in sulfur deficiency responses.
