Using Microsoft Access and Excel, I queried databases and analyzed data to compose a variety of professional reports based on the demographic and risk factor trends associated with those taking an HIV test at a publicly-funded health facility in Florida. I specified and explained the multivariate trends in these data. Using Microsoft Excel, I generated tables, charts and graphs to include in the reports as well as in PowerPoint presentations. Reports included: annual reports (and updates); semi-annual progress reports to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); quarterly reports; ad hoc reports to fulfill data requests from staff in the field as well as academic researchers; and reports based on a biennial client satisfaction survey. I took the initiative to do multivariate analyses to identify very specific target groups who appeared to be at highest risk for testing HIV positive. This analysis assisted staff and management in their efforts to implement a program of “high impact prevention.”

I worked in a program that assisted HIV-infected Floridians pay for life-saving medications. I oversaw and managed data and data reporting requests for information obtained through the ADAP database. I tracked revisions and enhancements made to the database. I created and maintained ADAP Database accounts for users throughout Florida. I participated in a programmatic assessment of a funding enhancement for the ADAP program. Here, I analyzed survey data and produced a summary report. I created Excel graphics and Power Point presentations based on the ADAP data. I also fulfilled ad hoc data requests

I coordinated training efforts for the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Bureau of Preparedness, Training and Exercise Unit. This was training related to “radio inter-operability.” Radio inter-operability allows different agencies to use different radio frequencies and modalities as a means to ensure communication with one another. Protocols were being developed and equipment was being deployed to enhance radio inter-operability. I was also very fortunate to receive an excellent battery of training on the Incident Command System (ICS) and The National Incident Management System (NIMS) for emergency preparedness and response as developed by the United States Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA). These are programs developed to provide a more uniform, effective and efficient response to emergencies at all jurisdictional levels.

I analyzed data and wrote portions of the annual report on school health programs (clinics) for public schools in Florida. I provided technical assistance to data reporters to improve the performance of the school health data reporting system. I conducted site visits of public school health clinics. As part of the preliminary planning for these site visits, I planned, coordinated, and conducted preliminary and exit interviews with county public health officials and appropriate school health staff. I observed and noted the adequacy of the clinics regarding staffing, equipment, and procedures. These observations were compared to established standards for school health programs.

Using SPSS for Windows and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, I compiled, organized, and analyzed statewide children and family data in Florida to conduct a five-year trend study of violent juvenile crime. I produced a data-based management report based on this study. For this report, I developed graphics in Microsoft Excel. Graphics included three dimensional multivariate line graphs, bar graphs, and pie charts. I also reviewed and edited other management reports for content as well as for grammatical and mathematical accuracy. In addition, I reviewed and evaluated proposed programmatic performance measures from contracted providers/grantees and provided technical assistance for improving those measures.

I conducted a pilot study survey and evaluation of "HealthTouch®," a touch-screen computerized kiosk containing consumer-level pharmaceutical and health information. For this survey and evaluation, I composed, distributed, and retrieved a survey questionnaire targeted at likely users of the kiosk. I accurately compiled, organized, verified, and analyzed survey data. I wrote a statistical and evaluation report based on the data and presented the report to interested parties. The report included recommendations to management for the improvement of the kiosk system. I also demonstrated the kiosk in senior citizen centers in south Florida. Using established and accepted prediction models and demographic data from the demographic periodical “Florida Abstracts,” I accurately compiled and maintained databases on the estimates of Floridians without health insurance focusing on uninsured children from birth to age five. In a timely manner, I fulfilled ad hoc data requests from government officials, industry experts, and consumer groups on these estimates.

I was the principal author of the 1994 and 1995 Annual Florida Drug Law Enforcement Survey. This is a survey of all Florida sheriffs and municipal police chiefs on their impressions of the illicit drug problem in their jurisdictions. I conducted and/or supervised all phases of this survey project: revised and/or updated the survey mailing list; distributed and collected survey questionnaires; accurately coded, input, and verified data; analyzed data with dBase IV, and wrote a report based on the survey findings. I delivered weekly progress reports of this project to my supervisor. For the 1995 survey, I achieved a 90 percent overall response rate including responses from all 67 sheriff's offices. I presented the report to professional groups and interested parties.In order to reduce data reporting errors, I provided technical assistance to contracted sub-grantee data reporters via telephone, e-mail, and/or in-person trainings at regional workshops across Florida. I composed and distributed technical bulletins on how to avoid common data reporting errors. I analyzed and evaluated grant proposals in three major areas: drug education (i.e., “DARE” programs), illicit drug eradication/interdiction, and drug abuse treatment programs. I made recommendations to sub-grantees regarding the improvement of their proposed programmatic performance and outcome measures.

I worked in the injury control unit of the Emergency Medical Services Division of the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. This work involved injury surveillance and prevention. I developed an annotated bibliography of professional journal articles and videos on the etiology (causes of) childhood bicycle accidents and injuries. I wrote brief newsletter articles on the importance of wearing safety helmets while bicycling.I analyzed data on a "Fighting Fair Model" demonstration project in the Miami-Dade County public schools. This was a program to train fifth graders in more pro-social conflict resolution techniques. A classical experiment design was employed to test the effectiveness of this program. I was able to determine that the program was, indeed, effective and, due to my curiosity to do more in-depth analysis, determine just where the program was most effective.I received in-service training in epidemiology through a correspondence course from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I oversaw and managed projects related to the Florida nursing homes patient data reporting system. These data included patient demographics, payer status (changes), and discharge disposition. I ensured accurate data collection, data entry and data verification. I also zealously ensured that patient data remained secure and confidential. I compiled and analyzed nursing homes patient data with SPSS. I produced and distributed annual, quarterly and ad hoc reports based on these data. I composed and distributed technical bulletins on how to avoid common data reporting errors, and provided other technical assistance to data reporters. I designed and conducted a statewide field audit of the nursing home patient data reporting system. I drew a stratified random sample of facilities and records within facilities to review. I coordinated site visits in all areas of the state. I compared records of data sent to the agency with source documents at the facility. I discussed reporting problems and issues with facility managers and staff. Once the audit was complete, I wrote a management report based on the findings of the audit and recommended corrective actions based on the audit. I was given additional responsibility to supervise a Statistical Aide II and a Fiscal Assistant II.

For a local Civil Service board, I evaluated job applications to qualify candidates for a variety of Civil Service examinations. Evaluation and qualification was done by: training and experience schedules, written examinations, and/or performance examinations.I constructed and/or revised the following Civil Service examinations: Training and experience schedules: Pharmacist, Citizens' Assistance Coordinator. Written examination: Police Sergeant, Gas (Building) Inspector, Automotive Mechanic, Secretary. Performance examinations: Truck Driver.I composed job announcements. I actively recruited candidates for pharmacist through regional universities with pharmacy schools. I did targeted recruiting for women fire firefighters through mayors' offices of local jurisdictions.I helped proctor mass examinations for police officer, deputy sheriff, and firefighter.

As a teaching assistant, I had full responsibility for teaching one section per term of an undergraduate introductory sociology course. I selected and assigned texts. I determined learning objectives. I made lesson plans, and prepared syllabi, lectures, study guides, and multiple choice examinations. Examinations were generated from a computerized test item bank, then edited, revised, and/or supplemented with original items. With the assistance of the FSU testing and evaluation center, I evaluated the performance of multiple choice examinations given to my students. Analysis included descriptive statistics of test scores, item to total correlation, and median split comparisons for individual items. I reviewed these examination statistics and revised test scores and examinations accordingly. I assigned and evaluated short essays and term papers. I reviewed my instructor/course evaluations and made improvements in my performance accordingly. I consistently received above-average evaluations from my students and compared favorably with more experienced full time faculty. I was honored to be voted co-winner of the 1983 Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year by my department. As a research assistant, I conducted library research and literature reviews (race relations), coded survey questionnaires (Florida Retirement System Survey), wrote data analysis computer programs (with SPSS and Lotus 1-2-3), performed statistical analysis of data, and conducted telephone interviews (Older Americans Survey).

Under the auspices of the Lively Technical Center (of Tallahassee, Florida) and the non-profit Motorcycle Safety Foundation (of Irvine, California), I planned, coordinated and taught a one-day workshop for improving the riding skills of experienced motorcyclists. The workshop included three hours of classroom instruction and three and one half hours riding skills coaching and evaluation on a practice riding range. I successfully trained six adult riders and managed the 100 percent fee-supported course within budget.

During the senior year of my social sciences studies at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, I was recruited by one of my professors, Dr. George Reinhart, to be a tutor with a formal university program. I tutored under-achieving, economically disadvantaged freshmen and sophomore students in undergraduate sociology and psychology courses: marriage and family, social change, social psychology, and introductory psychology. I provided instruction, relevant examples, and coached students on effective study and learning techniques.
