Ivan Sheehan is the Principal Benefits Consultant at The Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (OTIP), responsible for finding successful benefit solutions for Ontario’s education employees. Looking below the surface to help clients understand their benefits and identify opportunities to protect the comprehensiveness, affordability and sustainability of their benefit programs. Ensuring that benefit programs remain aligned with their employee needs. Ivan has 25+ years of experience working in the employee group benefits field, including consulting, underwriting, financial, premium and customer service disciplines. In addition to the experience gained at OTIP he has background working for prominent Canadian insurance carriers and a Canadian financial institution. His experience goes well beyond traditional plan management to include customized benefit strategies like pharmacy integration and other changes that focus on optimal care for people. Ivan was a key developer of the opening of the OTIP pharmacy MemberRx as well as instituting a independent clinical pharmacy team. Ivan is a graduate of McMaster University with a degree in Commerce with a focus on compensation and accounting. He holds designations achieved through the International Foundation of Employee Benefits Plans and Dalhousie University (GBA and Trust Management). Proven Success• Vital role in evaluating, negotiating, establishing, procuring and consulting on the Provincial life, health and dental benefits program (ELHTs) for the five largest Education Unions (ETFO, OSSTF, OECTA, CUPE, AEFO). He is now the Principal Consultant that oversees the education ELHTs plans that protect and serve over 600,000 educators ($1.5 billion in funding). • Successfully manage the benefits strategy for one of Ontario’s largest long term disability pools (145,000 lives), OTIP’s life and AD&D pools along with multiple large and small case health and dental plans. • Successfully maintain the competitiveness of a 40,000 member voluntary flex-based retiree health and dental benefit pool (achieving over 8-10% growth each year for 10 years). • Implemented four provincial teacher federation-sponsored long term disability programs within a 18 month period. • Act as lead consultant to the local and provincial collective bargaining to ensure high quality decision making.
