Car race ready on time through good time management, effective online communication, and coordinating access with University faculty • Identified areas to improve through race and testing debriefs, discussing solutions and effectively using the workforce to realise the upgrades. Fixing and strengthening of array tilt mechanism and implementing better weather data into simulation software • Despite withdrawing from the iLumen European Solar Challenge (iESC) we orchestrated our own 24-hour challenge and took part virtually. • Designed various systems for the DUEM entry to the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge 2019. This car finished 14th in the competition, the best British finish in twenty years • Led the machining operations for the pattern of the car - programmed and operated a 3x2m vacuum-bed CNC router without any supervision, guidance, or prior experience. Machined close to 100 unique 3D pattern pieces out of oversized stock with no errors, waste stock, or downtime• Initially used Meshcam before learning Fusion 360 CAM and writing a custom post-processor for Fusion 360 to output G-Code the router could interpret. Cut cycle times in half and increased overall surface quality as I gained high familiarity with the program through experience and extensive research in a matter of weeks• Performed maintenance and optimisations including installing and setting up automatic tool changes, automatic tool zeroing, clever vacuum bed setups to ensure solid work holding, and multiple time saving techniques within Fusion 360• Extended knowledge to other machines at the facility, including a smaller enclosed CNC router, for which I created another custom post processor, to machine pattern pieces for smaller components such as clevises and brackets using two-sided machining• Designed, specced, and installed entire braking system optimising balance between braking force, weight, and safety. Used self-retracting brake calipers to ensure that the pads fully retract from the rotor to decrease power consumption of vehicle • Helped design steering system for car, minimising overall weight while meeting key safety standards.
