Opto-Mechanical Intern

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Position included the application of aerospace engineering to the research and development of space related technologies. Mechanical design, thermodynamics, critical thinking, problem solving, and report writing were all required during this time. I worked primarily on mechanical systems of the Dusty Thermo-Vacuum Chamber (DTVAC), a facility designed to simulate harsh Moon and Mars conditions.I worked primarily on the system used to disperse electrostatically charged dust simulant over the test equipment. I researched methods used for systems of this type, and created several different concepts to test. For each concept, I built a scale model to test its performance and devised a test method that produced comparable results. The agitation of the dust simulant required the application of motion dynamics and the study of how different motions impacted the dispersion rate and pattern. I designed the final system to optimize the useable area while creating safe environment for workers around the system and ensuring the system was easy to maintain. I also performed thermodynamic and fluid dynamic calculations while assisting with the design of a liquid cooling system for the project. I helped design and build this system to efficiently cool critical equipment used on the DTVAC Project.
