Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), is a high grade malignant and inoperable brain stem tumor. It is located in a critical part of the brain called the pons, which controls heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. DIPG, is a devastating disease that also affects the cranial nerves, resulting in symptoms with or a complete loss of: facial expressions, speech, vision, hearing, walking, balance & coordination, weakness or paralysis in arms & legs, chewing, and swallowing. The child is cognitive while they lose each of their bodily functions, until they finally succumb to DIPG. DIPG, is the leading cause of cancer related death in children, and has a Zero 0% survival rate.DIPG, is the only pediatric tumor in which from the day the child is diagnosed, they are terminal to begin with.DIPG, affects children usually between the ages of 5-9 years old, and has a median survival of less than 1 year. Brain cancer, is the leading cause of cancer deaths among children. Brain tumors, are also the most common solid tumors in children, with close to 5,000 children diagnosed each year.Cancer, is the #1 killer of children by disease in the United States, yet remains one of the most underfunded.
