Having a keen interest in sailing small boats, a career in marine and aviation insurance seemed connected, but slightly less risky than sailing for a living! I soon became a marine underwriter with the responsibility of developing a profitable account. I joined a Lloyd’s broker broadening my knowledge, at the sharp end; dealing directly with insured’s, ensuring they had the right policy cover at the right price and their claims were swiftly paid.To gain wider experience of IT and project management I joined a consultancy firm, soon learning that time is money and that clients expect results, so you have to come up with solutions quickly. For a number of years I specialised in managing inspection of records audits; very satisfying, when sizable problems were identified and on most occasions, with diplomacy, a compromise was reached before any litigation. I am very proud of my project work with Lloyd’s reconstruction; an amazing opportunity to use a full range of BA skills; proving that even the most complex of problems can be solved!Claims assignments followed negotiating, reviewing and performing the full duties of a claims adjuster and ensuring leakage was minimised.My educational work with the Insurance Institute of London has been rewarding and ensured I am ahead of the curve on electronic trading and aware of threats due to lack of data control.I am pleased that most organisations are now embedding a risk aware culture into the daily activities of staff and that mentoring and training staff is a key and can be fun. Some of the barriers are being broken down and I can see great advantages in improving claims processes and using claims case experience to improve risk assessment.I believe multi skilled staff is the key to the future and this is where I feel I can help!
