I was a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University’s Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH) in the fall of 2005, and continued as a Research Associate during 2006-2007. At CRASSH I wrote Creating the AHRC: an Arts and Humanities Research Council for the United Kingdom in the 21st Century, published by Oxford University Press (2008).

From 2003 to 2005, I served as a Senior Advisor on joint activities to the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), helping create their interagency partnership for “Documenting Endangered Languages.” From 1989 to 2003 I was a senior official of the National Endowment for the Humanities, serving variously as Director of Research Programs, Director of Education Programs, and Acting Chairman. Earlier, as the College Board’s Executive Director for Academic Affairs and Director of Academic Relations (1982-89), I led creation of “The Green Book,” the widely influential Academic Preparation for College (1983).

I was Director of the Academic Governance Study at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (1980-82).

I held an American Council of Education Fellowship at the U.S. Department of Education (1979-80).
