About James Monaco

Both my academic and industrial experience has focused on the development of sophisticated computer vision systems using complex mathematical algorithms. I have extensive experience in a variety of fields such as big-data analysis (e.g. machine learning, deep learning, manifold learning, dimensionality reduction), image processing (e.g. filtering, feature extraction), object detection (active contour models), and pattern recognition (Bayesian classification, survival modelling, support vector machines, Markov random fields).I have been involved in three start-up companies: I was the first employee of VuCOMP and a founder of IbRiS. I am now the Lead Scientist at Inspirata Inc. All three are medical imaging companies.

I am responsible for the creation of state-of-the-art detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction systems in the medical imaging domain − with emphasis toward digitized histology. More specifically, I oversee the entire product lifecycle, which consists of market analysis, data acquisition, research and development, productization under a quality management system, FDA submittal, study publication (for acceptance into clinical standards and reimbursement), and product deployment.I also actively participate in all aspects of scientific development. This includes 1) creating algorithms that extract and quantitate relevant image-based information from digitized histology specimens and 2) designing sophisticated statistical models that leverage this information − along with other relevant clinicopathologic features − to predict disease progression and response to therapy. This work yielded 12 journal papers, nine conference papers, four abstracts, an oral presentation award, and $75K in external funding.
