When I was in elementary school—I couldn’t read quite right. It was something about the letters b and d man, they’ll get you every time. I vividly remember getting pulled out of class, and the feeling of shame I felt having been the only one singled out in this way. I’m not sure if my desire to help kids came from this moment, or if it was always there, but I’ve been volunteering with children since I was one myself. From biking across the street from my middle school to the local elementary to read with 2nd graders one on one, to volunteering as an assistant debate coach to my high school’s team after graduation, I have worked to make sure that every child has the ability and the confidence to use their voices the way they want. Working with children is my passion, but it’s also helped me tremendously interacting with clients at Goldman Sachs. As an client onboarding specialist, I have often found that helping explain policies and procedures to our clients has been the best way to make sure I understand them myself.
