As a Student Gardener, I was in charge of the landscape upkeep of the University of Minnesota’s Mall. I mulched and trimmed, and even planted arrangements including the big maroon and gold “M”.

With MIHV, I worked with two incredible teams to put on two summer programs. With the MIHV GIS program, I used my GIS and media skills to help instruct a group of students on how to create interactive ArcGIS Story Maps. We brought Omaha Public Schools students around to community spaces of Somali, Guatemalan and Karen Refugees. Working with the Somalia group, we brought students to local mosques, shops, and restaurants, whilst giving them the tools to discover where Omaha's refugee populations live and work upon arrival. In the final days of their program, I helped students use GIS to map these locations in order to publish maps for use by resettlement agencies.In MIHV's second program, I completed research on Omaha's historic former streetcar corridors, to prepare for our camp which would teach OPS middle school students about former ethnic enclaves. I helped to organize interviews, panels, tours, and meals with those native to these neighborhoods, teaching students community outreach skills. We then met with architects at BVH Architecture to discuss potential plans the students could draft. This internship was amazing, not just because of what all I learned, but also for the incredible projects I was able to help these students bring to life. I'd like to thank Kristine Gerber for including me in the program!
