The Career Launch Program is RBC's attempt to break the "no experience, no work" cycle that many graduates face upon completing their degrees. Out of 5,000 applicants nationwide, 100 Associates were chosen to participate in the Program's inaugural year. The CLP is a rotational program that sees Associates through three rotations in one year period. The first six months were spent being trained as a Client Service Representative at an RBC branch, where we learned how to make the client experience an exceptional one. The second rotation, three months in duration, entailed working at a non-profit organization (CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation in my case) where I worked in the strategic research department, conducting research to find eligible companies whose philanthropic interests aligned with those of the foundation. And finally, The last rotation, also three months, involved working in the Human Resources department at RBC, where I undertook a project to determine the causes of high attrition within RBC call centers throughout Canada. From there, I developed an action plan that will, hopefully, lead to a lowering in attrition levels nationwide.

Pointe Au Baril, Ontario

Conducted general maintenance for homes on the islands that make up Pointe au Baril, in the Georgian Bay area. Work included painting cottages, yard maintenance, garbage pickup, as well as general labour work. As the company is run by a friend during the summer, we had to keep a detailed list of expenses, and give accurate estimates for clients. We also dealt with renting equipment (tractors, hauling equipment, boats) and transport them to our clients' properties.

Bern, Switzerland

After finishing grade 12, I worked at the Canadian Embassy in Bern, Switzerland under the head of Public Affairs, where I conducted research and learned about the various ins and outs of diplomatic work. My mandate was to keep an eye on current events in Switzerland and Europe, and prepare memos or research papers describing their relevance to Canadian interests that I would present to the Ambassador.
