Jan founded her consulting company, Educating For Food Allergies, LLC (EFFA) in 2001. Her expertise covers a broad range of issues including the CDC's guidelines & recommendations for managing food allergies in schools. She provides consulting services to families to assist them in working with school personnel in the development of Individual Healthcare Plans and Section 504 Plans, and often serves as an advocate for them at school meetings. Jan provides educational and professional development workshops to school nurses, teachers, cafeteria and auxiliary staff, and has educated over 300 Massachusetts school nurses. She is often utilized to assist school districts in the writing and development of life-threatening allergy district policy. EFFA is a registered provider of Professional Development Points with the Mass. Department of Education and meets the requirements of the Mass. Board of Registration in Nursing to provide Contact Hours for continuing education for nurses. Jan is a frequent speaker at meetings sponsored by the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America, New England Chapter, and currently serves on their Board. As a food allergy educator, she has testified on behalf of MA HB #1757 for emergency response personnel to carry & administer epinephrine and MA SB #513 for food service staff to be knowledgeable about food allergies.
