Worked as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the Clinical Immunology laboratory at Addenbrooke's.My role included testing patient samples for a variety of autoimmune conditions, lymphocyte panels, vaccine response, monoclonal gammopathies and acute phase proteins, rotating through several specialist sections (including autoimmune serology, protein immunology and cellular immunology). I have been competency assessed to run a variety of automated assays on several different analysers and am competent to perform many manual techniques and assays. These included EIA/ FIA, protein electrophoresis, nephelometry, flow cytometry, multiplex bead assays and fluorescent slide reading. I also took part in lone working for weekend and late shifts.I developed my technical knowledge in this role, including maintaining and troubleshooting the automated systems in the laboratory, as well as running a validating quality controls and calibrators to ensure the results obtained are accurate and reportable, whilst adhering to strict turnaround times and prioritising urgent work. Biomedical Scientist
As a newly registered biomedical scientist I am developing myself professionally so that I can utilise the skills I developed as an MTO, with regard to the running of the lab and specimen processing. As such I need to be able to troubleshoot errors and work in a logical manner to adhere to turn around times in a busy pathology laboratory.Progressed from Band 2 MLA to Band 5 Biomedical scientist whilst in this role, rotating through Blood Transfusion, Haematology and Clinical Immunology.Blood Transfusion:Main duties involved analysing patient samples to obtain a forward and reverse blood group and to ascertain antibody status, performing antibody panels to identify probable antibodies and to issue compatible blood to patients.As part of this I was involved in stock rotation, including blood stocks and reagents, booking in samples and checking quality control systems (such as temperature monitoring and analyser controls).Haematology:Running FBC analysers and dealing with anomalous results, reading blood films and thick/ thin films for blood parasites and ensuring samples did not fall past their turnaround times. Was training in blood film morphology with regards to identifying haematological malignancies and was able to identify blasts and abnormal red and white cells in blood films. From training received alongside digital morphology cases was able to identify some reactive changes in the blood film as well as blood parasites, such as malaria strains.Was also involved in running coagulation assays for clotting deficiencies as well as individual factor assays.
Medical Technical Officer
As an MTO it is my job to ensure that all samples are labelled and put in for their correct tests. I am involved in the daily maintainence of the laboratory and ordering new blood stock and consumable stock for the lab. The role also involves taking telephone requests and using my professional judgement to best recommend a strategy for a patient and to flag any anomalies.I work in the HIT (Haematology, Immunology, Transfusion) laboratories. Whilst working as an MTO I used my rotation in the laboratory to complete the IBMS portfolio to achieve the certificate of competence. In doing so I took on more of a trainee biomedical scientist role and was therefore involved in quality control, auditing, producing manual results and following up samples for further testing.
