In 2008, I had a Senior position at a company and was very content in my career. The leadership at the company could be abrasive, but I felt that I could avoid any dust-ups by focusing on my job. One day, I was put into a situation that made me react abruptly. Some “choice language” was used by leadership to an associate and I decided it was time for me to leave. I left immediately. I left the company that day with no regrets, but I didn’t have a back up plan. Like many Americans, I found that my “career” was part of my identity. It defined who I was. I was very naïve thinking I could quit and that things would automatically work themselves out. I searched for several months to find a good opportunity to continue my career, but this was close to the time when the economy was turning. I took several part-time jobs. Not having a career that I was proud of took a toll on me mentally and spiritually. One day I spoke with my sister and she advised that I needed a fresh start. She suggested that I move down to Georgia, where she lived, and start anew. I did! After joining a new church in Georgia, I heard about an opportunity with an auto lending company. The company didn’t have a Senior level position to offer me at the time but said that they could bring me in at entry level. They said they were growing and that there could be opportunities in the future. I accepted the position.A lot has changed in my life since I accepted that position. I met my beautiful wife. I have had the opportunity to meet more incredible people I may not have met otherwise. I’ve continued to grow and mature. I’ve been part of a company and culture that has afforded me with many, many opportunities (which is what I yearned). I’ve visited parts of the country and the world that I never have been before.A lot of things in my life have also stayed the same since I took that position. The feeling I get by working with a great group of people and building something is the same. Working with people and taking an idea and bringing it to fruition is an incredible feeling that I pray never changes. Building relationships and friendships with my teams and clients and watching others personal and professional growth is like nothing else. That has not changed.For many reasons, I am humbled and grateful.
