I interned as an antenna control engineer working towards redesigning and updating the control software that monitors the hydraulic bearing instrumentation of the 40m DSN satellites in the Goldstone military base. Essentially, these satellites float on a thin layer of film and get shifted through a series of bull gears.The last update to the software had been done in 2008. The project was a huge sum of work and I was tasked to complete it by myself. My mentor Mike Wert, asked the company to sign me on as part-time over the course of my senior year so that I could finish the project. During that time, I would work 10 hours a week whilst completing my schoolwork. The control software I worked on through LabView and Agilent is capable of running tests that accurately reads, plots, converts, and calculates critical values like sensor voltages, film heights, and satellite positioning. I also worked on custom warnings and graphs are generated from a series of complex formatting and audio functions. Additionally, I built from scratch a simulation software that produces an inverted bit counter signal through a DAQ which runs through a list of values to produce a 360 degree plot of the satellite film height.
