He began working in the field at the age of 18 as a weekend manager at a historic site and, since that time, he has worked with historic sites, museums, historic preservation commissions, non-profit boards, local governments, corporations, families, and individuals. He has facilitated the acquisition and preservation of historic sites that include, but are not limited to, cemeteries; developed long-range plans; written preservation plans, National Register of Historic Places nominations, local landmark designation reports, exhibition catalogs and other books, and successful grant applications; coordinated projects between historical and cultural organizations in various counties and states; written and published eight books and articles; and, worked incessantly to promote historic preservation to groups with varying demographics. His work as a peer reviewer for the American Association of Museums (AAM) has resulted in Institutional and Collections Management Assessments for museums in North Carolina, New York, Kansas, and Australia.
