>> As an Assistant Research Professor & Program Manager for the Neural Engineering Center for Artificial Limbs (NECAL) Rehabilitation, I m\anaged all administrative aspects of the NECAL’s day-to-day operation. I acted as a liaison between NECAL and RIC’s financial organization to receive timely, accurate financial reports. >> I acted as a research liaison between NECAL and other participants in the center’s major grant-funded research: a DARPA-funded effort (Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2007) led by Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Research Laboratory to develop next-generation upper limb prostheses.<< I researched upper limb control and reach as part of the DARPA project. Completed a pilot study to develop a shoulder-activated controller for a 2-degree-of-freedom powered shoulder joint and developed a PC-based implementation of Fitts Law (a widely accepted method for evaluating human arm reaching movements) to assess and compare the performance of several candidate controller designs.

>> As a Post Doctoral Researcher, Mechanical Engineering & Vision Sciences Departments, I managed all activities related to my post-doctoral research, including test equipment procurement and setup, development of experimental protocols and analytical methodologies for all data collected, application for IRB approval of the protocols, and development of test subject recruitment, selection, and screening criteria. I executed experimental protocols, processed and analyzed all resulting data, and interpreted the results.>> I researched the performance of the human visual system in the collision detection and avoidance task and devised a series of psychophysical experiments to investigate the visual system’s ability to detect and track the cue of looming (changes in the size of an approaching/receding object’s retinal image), and developed a quantitative model of its performance in this task. This was followed by an investigation that supported Leibowitz’s hypothesis that larger objects appear to approach more slowly than smaller objects approaching at the same or even slower speeds.<< As a professor, I developed a set of laboratory experiments for use in a Mechanical Engineering experiments course and advised the instructor and teaching assistant in guiding the class through them. I also guided and evaluated students in the performance of their research activities. << I prepared and delivered guest lectures for three upper-division undergraduate elective courses in Engineering and Bio-Engineering (15-20 students each) on the following topics: Signal detection theory and its application to the human visual system; Fundamentals of automatic control and its application to human operator models and analyses; Fundamentals of systems identification and its application to the human visual system.

>> Provided leadership to the business in developing and implementing a redesigned planning process, including the annual plan and the monthly/quarterly forecasts. Coordinated and led in consolidating the financial portion of the plan and forecasts and provided senior management with relevant, actionable information and a top-level perspective of the business’s financial performance. Provided ongoing support for special projects and process improvements.

<< Developed an Operational Performance Measures report to assess pulp/paper mill and system performance on an ongoing basis. Organized and led meetings of senior managers to identify and define key performance measures and directed the mills in reporting them. Synthesized, consolidated, and analyzed mill input and issued monthly reports of individual mill and system performance to senior management, highlighting key issues and areas of concern.<< Coordinated the development of the Annual Operating and Financial Plan for Towel & Tissue Manufacturing, consisting of 14 pulp/paper mills with annual expenditures of $1.5B. Developed the plan format and coordinated the mills' implementation. Analyzed and consolidated mill input and reported the plan's key elements and major risks to senior management.

<< Conducted an operational performance evaluation and strategy assessment for a $1B personal computer reseller. Analyzed the warehousing, distribution, MIS, and service delivery operations of the Hardware Resale and Value-Added Services divisions and determined each one's current and long-term profitability. Identified unexploited market segments in which the client would be uniquely advantaged and developed strategies to enter them, including identifying and evaluating promising acquisition candidates.<< Developed an international expansion strategy for a $1B consumer goods firm. Assessed current and long-term market attractiveness for emerging third-world and communist bloc countries and selected targets for entry. Developed entry strategies for each target and quantified these in terms of value and profit contribution. Evaluated a West German acquisition candidate and established an offering price and value recapture strategy. This expansion strategy was subsequently accepted and implemented.

<< Led a cross-functional team in implementing a pilot Activity-Based cost accounting system. Downloaded Labor, Bill of Materials, Routing, and Work Order records from separate mainframe databases to a PC. Synthesized the data and created a comprehensive two-year production history. Augmented the report with interviews with functional managers and developed allocation rules to yield actual product costs. This resulted in modifying product strategies and pricing policies to reflect each product's profitability more accurately.

Designed and implemented the first Strategic Review of the Analytical Instrument Group and its major product lines. Recruited and directed 5 multi-functional teams in analyzing market and competitor dynamics, and from this developed strategies to improve profitability.

Summer Internship: Led a team of MBA interns in performing post-audits of 90 engineering and manufacturing capital projects worth $60M. Developed the audit methodology and directed the team in its implementation. Identified and investigated projects deviating significantly from their original proposals and developed oversight procedures to eliminate such occurrences in the future.

Designed tests to determine Emergency Core Cooling System performance and supervised test personnel in their execution. Demonstrated that reactors could be safely operated at higher power levels, leading to substantial savings for nuclear power plant operators.

Installed a computerized data acquisition system to automate diesel engine performance testing, reducing test time and cost and improving accuracy.Created and redesigned computer software to model turbocharger/diesel engine performance and developed improved compressor and turbine geometries based on the results.Completed the GE Advanced Course in Engineering, Thesis topic: “Stresses and Strains in the GE Motorized Wheel’s Ring Gear”.

Developed a standardized design specification for the motors and starters used in turbine/generator lubrication and control systems, eliminating the need for direct engineering involvement.
