About Jay Nelson
Even at an early age, I knew I wanted to help my community. As a child becoming a police officer was a dream of mine. As I got older, I met a remarkable woman by the name of Senator Jamilah Nasheed. Senator Nasheed happened to grow up in the same housing project I was from. I saw how she fought to ensure the needs of the people from my community were met. She inspired me profoundly, and it was then that I knew that I wanted to work in Public Policy.Currently I am the Chief of Staff to the St. Louis City President of the Board of Aldermen Dr. Megan E. Green where I am responsible for planning, organizing, managing, directing and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the President’s office and staff. In my role I provide expert professional assistance and support to the President on a wide range of highly complex, sensitive and confidential topics; researches, analyzes and provides recommendations regarding difficult, sensitive, important and wide-ranging policy areas; I also serve as the President’s liaison to multiple bureaus Citywide committees and boards; and performs related duties as assigned. I most recently served as the Boards and Commissions Liaison, and Custodian of Records for the St. Louis County Executive where one of my main responsibilities was to collaborate with the St. Louis County boards, commissions, and committees to develop information and recommendations for consideration by county officials. One development I am excited about was serving as Lead Project Manager on the launch of a new boards and commissions website that made government more accessible and efficient for constituents on behalf of the County Executive.Daily, I see so many people in my city suffering as a result of poverty and inequality. Although this saddens me, it also is a major driver for me to fight for the very people I grew up with, just like so many leaders before me. My hope is to one day witness an equable society where families can have access to affordable healthcare, quality public schools, and livable wages. Driving change through policy is the bridge that I am using to connect government to solve community problems. A few of my career highlights include:* Managed 100+ community events that strengthened the relations between the government, community leaders, and general public.* Supervisory experience managing multiple levels from interns to Managers. * Project managed daily activities of a State Senator. I’m always interested in hearing from former colleagues and peers in my field, so feel free to contact me if you’d like to connect.
