Director - Infection Prevention Surveillance And Analytics
Director - Infection Prevention Surveillance & Analytics
Manager - Infection Prevention Surveillance & Analytics
Infection Prevention Surveillance Analyst
The development of this position was through a vision of optimal Infection Prevention work in an evolving health system. The functions of my role included becoming a subject matter expert on state and national requirements for reporting. Both reportable diseases with public health implications and healthcare-associated conditions fell under my responsibility, and I covered the most critical and high-risk populations across our IL affiliates. In addition to surveillance and reporting, I helped design the standardized workflows and competencies for our team. I was a liaison to the departments of public health in our large Chicagoland footprint. Over the span of my time in this role, I aided the transition this part of our IP model from its infancy to a fully-functioning, efficient team.
Infection Preventionist
My official title doesn't include 'prevention', but the description of my role starts with a goal - the prevention of infections in the patients and community we serve - and thus I adopted this title from the historical 'control' title we are stamped with. I have served in two primary facets at this hospital under two administrations: Pediatric Infection Prevention for Advocate Children's Hospital for a year and a half and as an "adult" Infection Preventionist for about the same. In both capacities, I had several responsibilities. One of my primary responsibilities was disease surveillance. This is done on many fronts: incoming communicable diseases through our portal(s) of entry, healthcare-associated infections across a wide breadth of populations, and special surveillance for emerging disease(s) and seasonal illness. In addition to this important duty, I organized, maintained, produced, and/or troubleshot many of our systems that we have to help us reach our goals. Here are a few examples: I was a coordinator for our electronic surveillance system for multiple Advocate sites. I have built and maintained our background file(s) that allow us to standardize our reports and track our rates and utilization over time. I also have led our system in developing policies, procedures, and data systems for ongoing quality audits to ensure validity and reliability. It may go without saying that I had many of the "traditional" responsibilities of an 'IP' day-to-day: rounding for patient safety issues and related environment of care concerns, attending multidisciplinary meetings around quality improvement initiatives, participating in ongoing survey-readiness audits, and providing education to a gamut of front line staff and key stakeholders.
Senior Analyst
As a member of our Strategic Analytics department, I was responsible for aggregating, analyzing, and presenting both financial and clinical quality data to a variety of customers within our health system. An extension of previous positions within UnityPoint, I leveraged my knowledge and experience with internal and external reporting bodies to make recommendations to our Senior Team and executives across the health system regarding programs that affect sustainability efforts. My focus and passion was incorporating quality and outcomes metrics alongside operational ones in order to connect the dots and provide the "bigger picture" when discussing system strategy in the coming years. Lastly, and in addition to above, I created a predictive model and worked through processes to evolve our forecasting capabilities to better prepare for the future of healthcare.
Quality Outcomes Coordinator
I was responsible for both internal and external data reporting. Furthermore, I served as the contact for various agencies that collect and report quality metrics, such as CMS and the IL and IA Departments of Public Health. I utilized my skills as a data analyst to assess various contracting services, predict future year's results based on current data and trends for programs like Value-based Purchasing, and made recommendations to our senior team regarding quality data and performance improvement opportunities. I had ownership of many of the quality reports that go up through our physician committees and served as a spokesperson for the Quality Division at our hospital. Lastly, I was embedded in the innovative work that represents the future of healthcare in our Organized System of Care (OSC)/Accountable Care Organization (ACO).
Infection Preventionist
I had several primary responsibilities related to data surveillance, reporting infectious diseases to various agencies, and maintaining data such as infection rates. I provided our new employee orientation to front-line staff, as well as a CEU course for nurses identifying best practices for infection prevention. I had the opportunity to participate in both the Eastern Iowa APIC and Blackhawk chapter APIC committees. As a result of my strengths in data management and presentation, many of the files built for this department are in use even after my departure.
