One thing that impresses me about him is his ability to recognize a need, and then work quickly to mobilize resources to fill that need. In the time I’ve known him, he has identified a need for a safe meeting and social space for Queer students of color at the University of Kansas. He organized Queer Students of Color, which met every two weeks and held a year-end social event, which he planned. Also at KU, he saw the need for a bridge between the LGBTQIA+ community and the university’s Counseling and Psychological Services, and developed a coherent and viable plan to address that. He participated in the Black Trans Advocacy Conference for the first time this year. Being struck by the need for access to mental health services and physical relaxation and well-being resources, Jay partnered with two other attendees to develop a wellness curriculum. They expect to implement the curriculum at the next conference. Lastly, I would be remiss if I did not mention that Jay personally consulted with me on an issue I face at work, and as a result, I am in the process of creating a training program to address that need. Jay is thoughtful, personable, and solutions-focused. He truly is a change-maker. "
