I received a Ph.D. in Marine, Estuarine and Environmental Science from the University of Maryland, College Park and a B.S. in Marine Science, Biology from Long Island University, Southampton. My previous research focused on nitrogen and carbon cycling in ocean, coastal and estuarine environments, as well as sediment environments, such as, salt marshes and mangroves. This included extensive research on the cyanobacteria, Trichodesmium and Richelia (a diatom symbiont.) While working at the University of Southern California, I expanded my research to include exploratory research in nutrient uptake in kelp. I have also participated in research and monitoring of harmful algal blooms (HABs) while employed as the Marine Biologist and Marine Policy Analyst for the Quileute Indian Tribe. I also worked extensively in the marine policy arena with a primary focus on fisheries and related topics, such as marine protected areas, oil spills and Tribal Treaty Rights. While employed in private industry, my research focused on algal species selection, optimization of algal growth parameters and lipid production. As well as, investigating algal production of nutraceutical products and uses of algae in bioremediation.My current research activities include phytochemistry research and providing expertise in the areas of marine ecology, climate change, marine policy and biotechnology.In my current position as Lab Director, my work is focused on protocol development and validation, QA/QC and regulatory compliance. My role also involves analysis of policy and legal frameworks.
