The Van Andel Institute (VAI) is a leading independent biomedical research facility dedicated to determining the epigenetic, genetic, molecular and cellular origins of cancer, Parkinson’s and other diseases, and translating those findings into effective therapies. The Institute is home to more than 300 scientists and support staff that work in on-site laboratories and in collaborative partnerships that span the globe with a commitment to improving the health and enhancing the lives of current and future generations.As the Director of Sponsored Research, I serve as the focal point for the organization’s portfolio of sponsored programs with responsibility for establishing effective partnerships and linkages between VAI, government funding agencies, and private grant making entities. This includes oversight for all pre-award and post-award activities, negotiation, research budgeting/forecasting, and assuring compliance with external regulations and VAI policy.Key responsibilities:- Leading a team of sponsored research analysts and administrators, including managing personnel and staff development, overseeing workloads, developing training programs to ensure programmatic compliance, and developing operational policy for the Office of Sponsored Research.- Leading the administrative hub for the externally sponsored research enterprise of the institution, including managing the negotiation, execution, and administration of all research grant and contract terms and conditions.- Facilitating the submission and administration of sub-award proposals and agreements.- Communicating and integrating compliance activities (IRB, IACUC, export control, clinical trial, data sharing requirements) with the Office of Sponsored Research.- Ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, sponsoring agency, and Institute policies and regulations, audit requirements, and OMB Uniform Guidance.

In this role I supported business development activities (funding searches, facilitating NDA execution, advising, budget development, proposal submission), program execution (interpretation of policies and award terms, program management, monthly financial analysis, reconciliation, forecasting and reporting), and post-award compliance and closeout (audit response, data management and storage). I also had primary oversight of ECE's business office, which handled ~3,700 purchase requests and other administrative support actions per year.
