Consulting In Game Design | Program Management | Ux | Vr | Ar | Games
My consulting time was brief but rewarding. I remain excited about the future of augmented and virtual reality.
Senior Design Director
No one ever comes to me and says "Hey Jeff, we have this small project with a great glide path that requires no travel", so I wasn't shocked when I was asked to take on Quantum Break. A little more than a year out, a significant portion of the Microsoft staff moved to other companies or projects. Internal perception on the title was grim, and user research scores for fun were a large contributor to that. My job was to upend the schedule, figure out what really needed to get done to improve the quality, and get it done with the resources and time we already had allocated.Cut forward to April of 2016, and Quantum review scores improved 25-30% from projections, and sales were outpacing forecasts by 30%. Quantum became the fastest selling Microsoft original title on Xbox One, the best selling digital release ever for Xbox, and ended with user reviews in the low 80's- Managed internal creative team at Microsoft- Worked extensively with external teams in Finland and France- Transitioned design team to Agile development, increasing velocity on change requests 100%- Owned schedule and deliverable for teams internal and external to MS with 90% on time delivery- Effectively communicated and executed quality plan to executives, driving increased marketing / PR spend- Utilized detailed telemetry in conjunction with BI and UR to overcome the ‘opinion’ factor
Director Of Design, Hololens Experiences
I remember getting a last minute invite to a top secret all hands, which at Microsoft can mean very bad things occasionally. We got in the room, the doors were locked, and Kudo unveiled the plan for HoloLens to a select group. I was blown away. The opportunity to work on things like HoloLens was the best part about working at MicrosoftRight around this time I was also promoted to Director of Design for our group. My duties as Director of Design included:- Directing and managing the design group, including FTE’s, contractors, audio, and dev support- Creative leadership and oversight for all HoloLens and Xbox titles for the group.- Created multiple POC's during early HoloLens development to secure additional internal funding- Creating 40% of the HoloLens launch titles with 25% of the functional resources- Mentoring my team of Design Directors to the best annual reviews in the history of the group- Working with the Senior Leadership Team to develop and improve processes for developing, improving, and production gating HoloLens titles across groups- Driving design ideas into cross group meetings and communicating results throughout greater org- Holding the design spot on the hiring committee for all HoloLens groups
