The websites of The (Columbia) State, The (Hilton Head) Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette each seek to provide a rich digital experience for their communities. My job was to improve and develop online content, expand the audience, optimize for mobile, and set social-media strategy for these McClatchy-owned newsrooms in South Carolina. In my first 15 months, the fan base of our main institutional Facebook pages grew by 22 percent, and unique visitors to our website grew despite adoption of a paywall.

I managed daily operations for two daily newspapers during a tumultuous time for my industry and my newspapers. Among my first chores was running point on the reorganization and merger of the Gazette and Packet newsrooms, an unfortunate but necessary consequence of the Great Recession. During my time in this position, I won the S.C. Press Association's highest award for editorial writing. I also turned my hobby — birdwatching and wildlife photography — into a successful blog, Untamed Lowcountry. I edited and reported several ambitious enterprise and investigative pieces, including one that prompted a state Secretary of State's investigation of a rogue nonprofit organization. I also took a strong role in staff training, and revamped employee evaluation system to increase accountability and sync with online-performance goals.
