When I was 24, I was called in for an employee appreciation meeting at my retail job. "Congratulations!" the store manager said to me as she handed me a small, gold-colored, plastic pin that had the words "3 Years!" printed on it in a font I can only describe as birthday balloon. A smattering of applause ushered me back to my seat.The next co-worker was called up and congratulated for his 20th anniversary with the company. He was awarded a bigger pin and two people even gave him a standing ovation. I was disturbed. Not by his greater award and fanfare, though a standing ovation would have been nice, but by him. Cliche though it may sound, I saw myself in that 20-year retail veteran."That isn't going to be me," I promised myself. A retail career may suit some people well, but it was only ever a temporary position for me. Up until then, I had been paralyzed with indecision and fear of the future. That plastic pin snapped me out of my apathetic lifestyle.I applied to college, got a job as a legal assistant, and finally asked out that girl I had a crush on.
