Research Development Services (RDS) at the University of Arizona (UA) is an integral part of the suite of research services provided by Research, Discovery & Innovation. Our mission is to help UA researchers and scholars identify funding opportunities, form effective teams, and craft winning proposals, with the ultimate goal of increasing the quality and quantity of externally-funded research and scholarly activity at UA.

• In 2011 was among a small group selected to establish the Arizona Board of Regents-designated UA STEM Learning Center, connecting the S. AZ community to STEM resources at the University and facilitating access to UA STEM programs, research and discoveries. • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of Center, including financial oversight, establishing and maintaining partnerships, website content and communications. • Facilitated partnerships among researchers and educators to build and sustain the UA’s informal education infrastructure. Recruited in 2007 to contribute to the conceptual development and implementation of education programs, exhibits, and operations for the new University of Arizona Science Center. When the project was cancelled due to economic downturn, a small team including myself was tasked with revitalizing the struggling on-campus science center and planetarium.• Initially led in the restructuring of operations to allow the center to resume daily public admissions and programs. Played a leadership role in day-to-day science center operations, including ticketing, gift store, personnel and volunteers, on-site mineral museum and observatory, planetarium programming, permanent and changing exhibits and special events.• Responsible for the development, oversight and assessment of all education programs, including fee-based programs and workshops for children, adults & families; public programs for general visitors; and school field trips and special programs. Planned and implemented Flandrau’s community events, including the Science Café program, and involvement in ‘Science City’ at the Tucson Festival of Books.Projects:Co-Principal Investigator, NSF Geosciences Education grant, 'Exploring the Sky Islands: Basin and Range in the Desert Southwest'Co-Principal Investigator, NSF Connecting Researchers to Public Audiences grant, 'How do We Learn the Fate of Tropical Forests under Climate Change? -- A Multimedia Exhibition of Photographic Art Portraying Scientists and Students at Work in Amazonia'UA Fusion Summer Camp: Developed and implemented a summer science camp experience for elementary aged children that earned on average 30% of the center's gross revenues (www.facebook.com/uafusion).

• Participated as a member of executive management (2004-2007), where I worked directly with the Museum president, architects and contracted groups to plan and develop a $275M, 200,000-square-foot science center originally slated to open in 2010, now scheduled to open in 2016 as the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science. Assisted in a capital campaign to raise $100M in matching funds for the new center while concurrently managing an annual Education & Visitor Services departmental operating budget of $2.35M, of which $800,000 was grant-funded.• Developed, implemented and assessed the museum’s education and award-winning youth development programs, including fee-based camps, educational opportunity programs for underrepresented and underserved groups, public programs for general visitors including special events, and programs for K-12 schools field trips and outreach.• Responsible for the oversight and management of all visitor satisfaction components of the museum including box office, gift shop, museum hosts and public programs. Was directly involved with the management and planning for Museum general operations. Supervised 16 permanent, full-time staff and oversaw the training and supervision of 100+ seasonal & part-time staff and volunteers.Select Projects:• Director, Upward Bound Math & Science Center, funded by the US Department of Education. Over the eight years that I directed the program (1999-2007), we saw 95% of participants enroll in post-secondary education programs with 60% declaring a STEM major.
