Crain Communications is a national media company that specializes in news publications. They are in the process of digitizing their entire back log of “Advertising Age” publications, which date back almost one hundred years. I am in charge of digitizing the collection and ensuring that it is available for future reference. My duties include: using preservation techniques to take apart the bound volumes for scanning and for storage after, creating a guide for scanning the materials, using the Indus book scanner 9000 to scan the materials, labeling the files, and using Adobe Photoshop to clean up the images for permanent storage.
Archives Intern
The Washington Center Diversity Program is an independent, nonprofit organization that places college students in federal government internships to give them a better understanding and hands on experience in the government. The National Archives and Records Administration of Seattle houses government archives from the Pacific Northwest. I worked with the archivists there to learn the daily tasks of working in an archive. I processed collections by organizing, re-boxing, re-foldering, and using the MPLP method. I created finding aids, researched for description summary, and integrated previous information that was collected. I assisted with reference, retrieving information and documents for researchers. I attended workshops and meetings to learn and strengthen skills. I collaborated with colleagues in a deaccessioning project where I collected data and helped oversee the project. I attended a two week records management program where I received a NARA certification.
Archives Intern
I split my time working with Special Collections, Archives, and the Conservation Lab. In the Special Collections, I worked on several small projects. I worked on a provenance project where I compared information in the catalog to that information in the original documentation. If the information did not match then I corrected the metadata in the database. I also worked on a project where I researched books in the Special Collections to the catalog to help with future purchasing of rare books. In the Archives, I processed collections which included foldering, re-boxing, and organizing. I attended a workshop of ArchivesSpace and used that knowledge to create finding aids. I also did research to create description summaries for the collections. In the Conservation Lab, I created preservation sleeves for fragile documents. I dry cleaned documents and used heat set paper to repair maps.
Archives Intern
The internship consisted of a digital project. I went through their archives to find photographs, slides, pamphlets, posters, and any other significant documents that would be beneficial to project. The project was for the 40th anniversary of the non-profit organization. I was in charge of collecting all of documents and digitizing them for a Powerpoint presentation. After I was finished with is project, the organization hired me for some temporary work. I worked with the Great Reads program where they surveyed their readers on a book club book. The readers would send in their surveys and I would input them into a data system.
