Student Representative

Bellingham, Washington

The Student Rights and Responsibilities Code Review Committee meets once every five years to edit and update the code of conduct for WWU students. I was appointed to this committee, and my duties included reading, updating, analyzing, and preparing the code with other committee members to be the new code for students to follow. During this year long process, I also read codes from similar institutions in the state to compare and contrast Western’s code. We also held public forums for community members to weigh in. Two specific pieces that I advocated to be changed with the code were 1) the addition of an Amnesty clause in which students who were under the influence were encouraged to contact officials for help during emergencies without fear of being reprimanded by the code, and 2) the removal of gendered pronouns to allow the code to be applicable to the whole student body, not just those who identify with he/she pronouns.
