About Jerome Pinti
Senior scientist at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Portland, Maine.I have completed my PhD on diel vertical migrations and their consequences on pelagic ecosystem functions in 2020. I have a double master degree, a “General Engineering Degree" from the Ecole Centrale Paris, France and a Master of Science in Aquatic Science and Technology from DTU, Denmark.I specialize in biological oceanography and marine ecology, from zooplankton to top predators. I use observations, numerical models, and statistical tools to further our understanding of marine ecosystems. I love to discover and learn different methods to solve whatever challenge I may face.
Listed skills include Matlab and Consulting Environnemental.

Chercheur Postdoctoral
Phd Student
I pursued a PhD entitled "Vertical migration and the structure and function of pelagic ecosystems".My PhD project focused on Diel Vertical Migrations (DVM), a common feature of life in the oceans. In short, grazers migrate to a certain depth during daytime to avoid visual predation, but have to return to the surface at night to feed on phytoplankton. This can trigger the same migration pattern for their predators, resulting in the largest animal movement on Earth in terms of biomass. The goal of my PhD project was to use a trait-based approach to model these migrations which can be justified with notions from game theories such as Nash equilibrium. Once these migration patterns are understood, I look at the consequences of DVMs for ecosystem functions, in particular the trophic transfer efficiency of a food-web with organisms undertaking DVMs, and the role of DVMs in long-term carbon storage. This PhD enabled me to develop strong analytical and computational skills as well as scientific writing skills. It also enabled me to manage multiple projects involving several researchers across different countries.
Research Assistant
- Data collecting and network analysis for a project aiming at modelling international shrimp trades- Other support tasks for different projects, e.g. modelling and oceanographic data visualization (eel larvae dispersal, salinity and temperature gradients in the North Sea in relation with cod recruitment...)
