Social Work Intern, Zone Initiative
In my position as the Social Work Intern I had the opportunity to do both macro and micro social work through a variety of ways that included: policy research, provision of client services with individuals going through the court process, and engagement in various community service initiatives. I led the Owner Occupied Initiative (OOI), a specialized docket intended to assist homeowners age in place by connecting them with resources in order to remedy their housing code violations. Through these activities I engaged with public and private community resource partners and stakeholders. I also assisted with programming implementation, recruitment, data collection and assessment for Project Taillight, a public safety initiative that connects low income individuals with free car light repairs.
Information Associate, Global Education
In my position I supported the international dimension of Ohio State by providing customer service, advice, and consultation to the Global Education Unit under the Office of International Affairs. Duties included supporting risk management by enrolling students, faculty, and staff in supplemental insurance, maintaining travel registry, verifying enrollment, and assessing and collecting supplemental insurance payments; maintaining files in the student information system; overseeing application, acceptance, and records processes associated with student, faculty and staff engaging in research and educational activities abroad. The position also oversaw the payment of Global Education application fees, the assessment and payment of other Global Education charges, and issued refunds as necessary; responded to inquiries from internal and external stakeholders to assist with overall management of the programs; provided support for multiple education abroad scholarship processes, including but not limited to management of application work flow, prepared materials for review, acceptance, and student records.
Social Work Intern, Compliance And Quality Improvement
In my position as the Compliance and Quality Improvement Intern I had the opportunity to engage in social work administration, examined, participated, and completed multiple data related activities in relation to organization and case compliance. This included, but was not limited to observation of development staff meetings, provided feedback on documents and processes, and reviewed Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) for compliance and quality improvement. I collected, analyzed, and compiled data from results from client satisfaction surveys. I had the opportunity to observe a women's group therapy session, as well as volunteer for a COVID-19 vaccination clinic. This field placement included weekly supervision meetings to discuss cases, field work, and personal and professional development and interests in the social work field. This experience concluded in writing a literature review that examined equity, racial justice models, and biopsychosocial interventions.
Enforcement Support Officer I, Interstate
As an Enforcement Support Officer I, my primary efforts were to enforce and modify child support obligations in interstate cases. I determined the appropriate enforcement actions and implemented according to established laws, regulations, and policies. I was also in correspondence with agency clients and other individuals to obtain information necessary for the execution of assigned duties. This position included preparing accurate findings, notices, and other reports concerning the outcomes of these investigations for dissemination to courts, obligors, obligees, or other as appropriate. I reviewed and accurately interpreted all court orders, administrative orders, pleadings, payment records, case narratives, case files and other necessary documents. For multiple reasons I also prepared accurate calculations of arrearages due on accounts. I responded to all types of inquires via phone, email, fax, and in person from custodial parents, non-custodial parents, other child support agencies or entities and other individuals and organizations. Preparation of case summaries and other related documents, and extraction of and the accurate interpretation of information was another crucial part to this position. This position allowed me to learn database navigation skills as well as utilizing Agency, State, Federal and/or other resources to obtain and verify accurate and current information regarding relevant information of the client(s). I was voluntarily involved in a group that examined policies, practices, and procedures in relation to domestic violence and family safety. Specifically, I worked together with a team to examine the agency’s website and literature in order to provide clients safe access to information and resources regarding domestic violence and family safety.
Americorps Ohio College Guide
During my time as an AmeriCorps College Guide at I Know I Can (IKIC) I served as an advisor, mentor, and guide to typically underserved Ohioans – first generation college-going, low income, and minority students in getting the information and knowledge they needed and deserved to complete postsecondary education. I delivered programs and counseling on college and career explorations and financial literacy to primarily middle school students and high school juniors and seniors. Throughout my career I planned and implemented college and career advising services including Blueprint: College, a nationally accredited educational program, for students and parents, as well as led collaborative efforts with Columbus City Schools students, counselors, principals, staff members, and community partners to ensure proper delivery of services. I also assisted high school juniors and seniors with aspects of their college search, and financial aid processes which included registering for and ACT/SAT fee waivers, FAFSA and financial aid assistance. As part of my time at IKIC, I entered data into IKIC’s PATH database to track progress and success of all activities, grant processing, and financial aid awards. I generated quarterly reports based on student data that I had collected and entered into the IKIC PATH database. Skills I developed included, but not limited to: advising, mentor, interpersonal, leadership, communication, public speaking, teaching, tutoring, counseling, team work, youth development, and an understanding of the public school system and postsecondary institutions. The AmeriCorps program is a federally funded year of service that partners with non-profits and public agencies to meet the critical needs of communities. I chose to participate in a year of service as an AmeriCorps College Guide because I strongly believe in social responsibility, and that belief has only been strengthened by my service term as an AmeriCorps member.
