I am a parent of a child with Down's Syndrome. I have worked closely with our local Area Education Agency to address my son's needs. I have coordinated his services for the last 8 years including educational, medical, social, and recreation needs. I am now fulfilling my family by reaching out to other families to allow opportunities for other youth, both with and without special needs, to access recreation through scholarship opportunities. I am also responsible for promoting recreation programs and coordinating new programs in the community. So far, I have been able to coordinate for 3 new special needs programs. I have also helped to lead a new teen conservation board. I have encouraged partnerships between organizations to increase volunteerism. Being a William Penn University Alum, I have worked closely with career services and was able to get volunteer positions listed on the William Penn career services website. I am currently in the William Penn University College for Working adults Masters of Business Leadership program and will be working on a research project to help bring a community skate park to Oskaloosa. I will also be assisting with the local YMCA as a parent to form a parent group to improve overall care and help address care issues related to children with special needs. My family goals are to gain enough community development experience so that my husband and I can help the community where my husband is from in Kenya to improve quality of life and educational opportunities.
